I cried. The perfect balance of sweet and sour.

Loved the premise of this book, but wish it had gone deeper. Some topics hit on jumped from problem on the surface to eventual solution, but the reader never sees how the characters got from here to there. Too many things skimmed the surface, but I would have loved to explore more! Seemed good, but I wanted more! It's not long at all- could have afforded to be much longer!

I think I just don't like Katherine Paterson, which, you know, is kind of weird considering who she is. But I always find her books boring. This one didn't bore me; however, I absolutely hated Gilly. Hated her. So I didn't want to read it. But I finished it. I like the sort of ambiguous end. But Gilly sucks.

Gilly has been bumped from one foster home to another, and has learned the hard way to stay tough and not get too attached to anyone or anything while she waits for her mother to decide that she wants her daughter. Then she gets landed in a home that she thinks is the worst yet, but she eventually realizes it's where she belongs and want to be.
From the author who broke my heart with The Bridge to Terabithia, I should have known that I'd love this one, even though I started the thing really not liking Gilly at all. That's as Paterson wants it, of course, and then she makes you fall in love with the girl and her story. Very well done.

DNF'D. This little brat makes Holden Caufield seem reasonable.

Wow! I wonder if the author was ever a foster child or mother because this book is so true to life with the emotions that it captures.

I read this because I had it and I was bored. This was a wonderful book and should be a must read for all 4th to 7th graders. Any reader will feel compassion for the great Gilly.

I just listened to the audio with the boys. It was my third read-thru. I still adore this book. It will always be one of my favorites, and now my boys love Gilly as well.

Very quick, good read. Very realistic ending, too, which I appreciated. Would be good for a lot of kids.
