This is more like 3.75 stars for me, so I had to rate it a 4. It wasn't as great as the first book, but that's probably because I already knew what to expect. This one felt a bit chaotic because of silly misunderstandings, but the characters are lovable and interesting and I loved the ending.
I love Don Tillman so much. I laughed and cried while reading - Don is just so earnest. I wish recalled the details of the first novel better but I recalled that I liked Rosie a lot too which was not the case in this book. She was so mean. Like unbelievably mean and callous. I still rooted for them to stay together, because that is what Don wanted, but I really think she should take a hike. I agree with other reviewers that this book was hastily written to capitalize on the success of the first book but I still enjoyed more adventures of Don.
This was a roller coaster of emotions, after reading the first book, I was not sure what to expect of the sequel. But to be honest, I laugh, I got mad and I cried. Now I cannot even imagine what will happen in the last book. Don Tillman, you're a hero.
If I hadn't already read and loved [b:The Rosie Project|16181775|The Rosie Project (Don Tillman #1)|Graeme Simsion|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1371651741s/16181775.jpg|22084678], I would probably have given this 3 stars. Although The Rosie Effect had its moments, it was not as engaging or funny as the first and was more of a chore to read, and the story was actually pretty frustrating at times!
I LOVED "The Rosie Project" which was the first book in this "series" so I was very excited to realize that a second one existed.
I am so disappointed in this book! I, honestly, didn't even finish it because I got so bored. I am a self-proclaimed bibliophile who can count on one hand the number of books I've not finished in my life and it saddens me that this was one of them after the success of the first one.
Here are my issues:
1) Rosie lied to Don about "accidentally" getting pregnant. It was no accident and, due to Don's presumed Aspergers, was even more unfair and horrible than even in a regular relationship. They are supposed to have this great marriage so why did she feel she had to trap him into parenthood AND do it during a time when she is finishing her graduate degree which is, supposedly, so important that she argues with everyone about taking time off from it after the child is born!
2) She acts like a spoiled brat about the pregnancy throughout the book and refuses Don's help along the way even though it is his child too.
3) Don is just boring in this book. None of the fun, lovable parts of him are noticeable in this book. Instead he comes across as an uptight jackass and I didn't like him in the slightest.
4) The first book had me laughing, crying, and falling in love with all the characters. In this one I didn't like any of them.
Sadly, this book definitely did not live up to its predecessor and it will be returned to the library unfinished.
I would give this book a pass for sure.

This was really enjoyable. Not as good as The Rosie Project, but I'd forgotten how enjoyable it was to slip into Don's innocent world. I found myself analyzing so much of what "regular" adults find confusing or difficult about emotional relationships and couldn't help but wonder if it wouldn't all be a little easier if we were all more like Don.
Hmmm. I struggled with a review for this one. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. It's nowhere near as good as The Rosie Project and it made me dislike the titular character for reasons I won't get into since those reasons would be spoilers for the book. I didn't hate it, didn't love it. Probably wouldn't read it again, but I wouldn't advise people against it if they enjoyed The Rosie Project.
I am so disappointed by this book. I only finished it because I was snowed in and didn't have anything else to read. It got just too much. Also, making digs at social workers is super shitty, so thanks for that, Graeme Simsion.
