Dancer of Death by Jordan L. Hawk

Well DANCER OF DEATH set the foundation for all kinds of interesting developments and I will be jumping right into the next book so I can get some answers! Tensions are high at SPECTR as Caleb struggles with the other agent's dislike and fear of Gray but thankfully he has John and their new partner Zahira, who by the way, continues to be amazing. There's also some tension between our couple as Caleb begins to keep some secrets to protect John and I'm sure those will come to a head sooner rather than later. This has been such an amazing series and I'm so impressed with Jordan L. Hawk's ability to keep each book fresh with an interesting monster case to solve while also continuing the ever growing story of John, Caleb, and Gray.

These books are all fairly short, but they still pack quite a punch. In this case, we have a dancing demon, who makes people dance themselves to death. Things are still tense at work, with people still afraid of and sinking to school boy bullying tactics again Gray/Caleb (which, huh. Not smart, that!), and the new boss throwing out threats left and right. The only thing going well is the relationship between Gray/Caleb and John, and Zahira is fitting in well, but even this is on thin ice, with both men hiding seemingly little things from each other. It’s all going to come to a head, eventually, I’m sure.

I love this series and didn’t want Dancer of Death to end – or more, I don’t want to let these characters go! I need the next book now!!

I love how Gray and Caleb are delineated and you can see they are two different beings in the same body. I love how John treats them as such. You can tell all three are in this relationship together. The only things I missed from this installment were more overall relationship time and a love scene from Caleb and Gray’s perspective. I like seeing it from the perspective of three rather than just two.

The mystery was great and in keeping with the tone of the series. Anyone who has read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will recognize the name “Vila” and have a preconceived notion of the demon. This is not the very pretty, man enthralling creature from that children’s book though. This vila is altogether more sinister and dangerous.

Fans of the series won’t be disappointed. If you are new, start at the beginning with Hunter of Demons, Book 1 in the first Spectr series. Enjoy!

Enjoyable continuation. Here we find a demon who dances, and forces others to dance, and who is lithe and quick enough to give Gray a run for his money.

Also, there's a mysterious lurking figure who doesn't smell like "food", who will probably pay a large role in the arc of the full series. The SPECTR boss continues to behave in the worst possible way if his goal is actually to keep Gray under SPECTR's eye, but that seems to be due to idiocy rather than design (though I won't be too surprised if someone put him in charge knowing he would react that way).

Ok, this was really good except I didn't like how the captain? (person in charge of John) treated Calib as I thought SPECTR was totally revamped after the debakle of the last commander going demon and Calib/Grey saving everyone. So this animosity and mistreatment really feels like we are back in the first series and no one understands how powerful he is and that threatening him is stupid. But... we just sit there. So expecting another show down. This doesn't have any lead in to that but since I went to the next one, I know that it will build. This ends well and leaves them in a good place.

This series just continues to deliver. Just as Gray is starting to really strain under their forced benching by Barillo (gosh that character needs to die a painful death!) a case gets handed to John, Caleb and Zahira. Of course not everything goes as planned (when does it ever? lol) but in this case the ending is a good one for our fearless crusaders.

What I truly love in this series is that while we're dealing with an established relationship between John, Caleb and of course Gray, they still grow throughout the series. Just another reason to keep coming back *grin*

Another very good one that flew by so fast. I'm not sure what lays in the future for the team at the Spectr but hopefully it ends soon. The Captain is too much to bear. Their new partner is even more likeable though so I hope she sticks around. I'm sadly about to start the last book (that's published), then will go wait in a corner for the next
