It's been a VERY long time since I read this. But I'm glad I did. It's pretty typical for a young YA book. The plot is pretty simple and there's a nicely woven happy ending. But what I really loved is all the foreshadowing and the interwoven story within a story. It's so technically neat at the end that it's both a little too calculated and yet at the same time it's charming when the backstory bleeds into the main story.
Also, I didn't remember the racial commentary or overtones at all and I was very surprised when I got to certain points in the book. Though it never goes that deep or really makes unique or sophisticated insights it's still interesting that Sachar chose to include it at all. I guess it just makes a good first glimpse into a darker part of American history for young children.
All in all, a wonderful book that left me very nostalgic!

Still love this book even after 3 years! I adore how everything connects at the end and the ending really was beautifully written!! Ahhh...Still is my favorite "childhood" read! :)
