after reading exes and o’s, i was preparing myself for another five star romance. i was so excited because i loved amy lea’s other book so much that it’s cemented itself as an all time favorite.

unfortunately, set on you missed the mark for me.

i had a few issues with the story.

firstly, i disliked both characters right up until the 100 page mark. i think this was supposed to be a hate to love/dislike to love story but the foundation of the “hatred” was so stupid that it was hard to believe. i couldn’t sympathize with either character because they both irked me so badly. it took me 100 pages to like crystal, 20 more to like seth, and up until the 150 page mark to even care about their relationship. it also felt incredibly repetitive.

i think the middle of the story is where the book really shines. after 150 pages and before the 75% mark is where i fell in love with the book. i thought it had finally redeemed itself. i was laughing and giggling and really starting to sympathize with crystal. there were all the hallmarks or a cutesy romance.

then we get to the 75% mark and everything just went back downhill. all the conflict was, yet again, just completely stupid. it also provided one of the worst tropes in existence, the third act breakup. i can deal with a third act breakup if i feel like the reasons for the breakup are legitimate. this one was so dumb it wasn’t funny. the fact that they broke up over an instagram post??? hello???

having read amy lea’s second book before her first, i think her writing has definitely improved and i think i will 100% check out whatever she writes next. set on you just sadly wasn’t for me.

Crystal is a curvy fitness influencer sharing her body positive message on social media, where she has a pretty big following. When she encounters a man who steals her favorite squat rack she immediately determines him to be a nemesis. My biggest issue with this book was the beginning when they meet, it brings a slew of childish snippy interactions. It makes them both pretty unlikeable to me and I really wanted to abandon it, which I did for two days to read book 2

Scott her rack thief actually redeems himself and you see his really sweet side, and he really proves to her in little ways how much he really likes her.

A photo of them together brings some hateful trolls which makes her question her message of body positivity when she can't drown out the doubts.

The beginning really annoyed me but I am glad the second half of the book picked up but couldn't overshadow how much I disliked the first half.

I have a soft spot for books set in Boston. And in a typical Massachusetts way, when you go to a party you run into someone you know or at least someone new who knows someone you know. In this case that person was Crystal’s Squat Rack Thief, aka the grandson of her grandmother’s new fiancé, aka Scott.

This was a great enemies to lovers story with just the right amount of spice. I also enjoyed the exploration of body positivity, self-esteem, and being true to yourself by embracing both the good and the bad.

One of the highlights of this story was the family dynamics: Crystal and her sister, Crystal and her parents, even Crystal and her grandma. I loved their interactions just as much as I loved Crystal and Scott’s.
