A fun new fantasy that puts me in mind of "Olivia Kidney" and "May Bird." It's a little bit dark, a little bit funny and, ok, a little bit predictable, but I had fun reading it and I'll pick up the next one.

Recommended for 5th grade.

I’m very excited that this book was just as good (if not better) than I remember it!

Pairs well with [b:100 Cupboards|1661390|100 Cupboards (100 Cupboards, #1)|N.D. Wilson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1440607827l/1661390._SY75_.jpg|1656177] and [b:Coraline|17061|Coraline|Neil Gaiman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493497435l/17061._SY75_.jpg|2834844]. I recommend this for anyone who has a Harry Potter sized hole in their life.

It's quite a good read. I feel like Coraline and Nightmares! combined. And there're also talking cats which are hilarious. Also creepy.

This is an intense magical adventure story. With a spooky old house, magical glasses that let you go inside paintings, and talking cats, there is a lot of appeal for young readers. This is not a fantasy story for the faint of heart though. The consequences really are dire. And some of the scenes are definitely scary and dark. The only real quibble I have with this story is how one dimensional Olive's parents are (and really all of the grown-ups in the story). Her parents in particular are one note characters bordering on negligent to their child.

This was pretty much as good as I remember it. I absolutely love the concept that this book is centered around, and it has just enough mystery and magic and adventure to keep things entertaining. It's a book that you can pick up and quickly finish, while also being completely absorbed in at the same time.

Eight-year-old me clearly had good taste in books
