Dex and Winnie.
My mum had a saying…seek and ye shall find! And I found it! This book is a complete standalone, but it’s also the sixth book in the Cloverleigh Farm series - just the next generation. Winnie is from book one, the youngest sister and now she’s all grown up and has an older man in her sights. The series has come full circle so to say.
Dex is a grumpy single dad of two girls - Hallie and Luna - and he is trying his hardest to be the best dad, because that’s all he wants in life, his girls and his job. That is until he moves in next door to the effervescent Winnie (like the Pooh!). I could relate with Dex in some aspects, as my childhood wasn’t totally conventional as well, and it’s hard at times to accept the good things that happen in life. He feels it more so than I ever did, but I could understand where he was coming from. And it is so much easier to walk away than meet your fears head on. I’m glad he got it together and realized he was worthy as well as no one was better suited for him than Winnie.
The epilogue was amazing

Oh my gosh. Dex is the worst?? He’s like totally an asshole, curses at his kids, and most definitely has anger issues (seek help). His ex wife is always stressing that he’s not a good dad (rightfully so) and can’t take care of his kids and he literally does nothing to prove her wrong. Maybe he should try watching what his kids eat when the have allergies, or keeping them from running around the neighborhood and into strangers house unattended, or maybe put some damn sunscreen on them when they are spending hours outside in the sun?? The FMC almost immediately takes over as the care giver. She’s literally 22 raising this man’s children the second she meets them, all while taking care of him too. Please sir you are pushing 40 and raising kids, LEARN HOW TO COOK??
Also I like an age gap romance, but he was WAY too into the fact that she was young. Weird comments about her looking way younger than her age (so an actual child?) and I think he compared her to his daughters more than once. Very scary.
The “grand gesture” at the end felt rushed and not at all thought out. This girl deserved so much more than Dex had to offer. I’m on team ex-wife for sure. She was a queen for leaving his ass and worrying about her kids when they were with him. Also she was so chill when he started dating a 22 year old. I would not be so easy going.
Pacing in the book was weird. Very fast paced and the sex scenes, while entertaining, seem to come out of no where in the beginning. The first sex scene felt dubiously consensual at best. You’d think this guy would have a little more caution when banging his controversially young neighbor for the first time, but I guess not…..

I completely forgot that Melanie Harlow was coming out with a next generation Cloverleigh Farms series. But I'm so glad I saw someone reviewing this on Goodreads.
I love Melanie's Cloverleigh Farms Series. One of my favorites. I also loved that so many characters from other series also popped up from her other series.
Dex was a little grumpy and stubborn. But I still love me a single dad romance. Add in age gap and I'm just done for. I loved all the tropes in this. I also can't wait for the next book. "Enemies" to lovers? Surprise pregnancy? More tropes I enjoy. Bring it on.
