I waited a long time before I read this book. The hype and advertisement for this series is wild and being advertised as a fantasy romance is questionable. The Booktokers who are reviewing this book as "life changing" have to be receiving a huge paycheck for saying that because there is no way.

I don't even know where to begin really. Maybe with Violet. My god. Her inner dialog was EXHAUSTING. She's 20 years old? She reads like she's 14!  Her inner dialog is  extremely juvenile and she never seems to mature. If you start to forget that Violet is weak, has weak joints, arms, legs, back, muscles, knees, wrists, or ankles....they will remind you every few sentences. But they never really give us a clear understanding about what's actually wrong with her, unless I missed it. If you forget for ONE SECOND that Xaden is HOT AF, Violet will remind you every single time he walks into a room. There is one chapter where she is having a very serious conversation with her friend about how nervous he is with everything going on, Xaden walks into the room and she's like "Damn I love this man how can I keep it off my face?" Or something equally stupid. What an odd thing to think when your friend is confessing to you that he's not ok and he's scared. She has these weird moments where she just admires Xaden at the most inappropriate moments, it really really takes away from the story. It's awful.

Keep in mind, I knew what I was getting into with this book, I love a good romantasy. So, yes I am the target audience for these types of books.  But Violet was insufferable through out. There is a line from her POV that says, "My mouth waters at the muscled expanse of his back and that sculped ass." Things like this scattered through out this book made me cringe. The writing was bad, hire better editors. This book was too long. The dialog was modern and that does not work for me in a fantasy book.

If you forget for one second that lots and lots of people die in this little dragon academy, don't worry they will remind you about 40 times per chapter.

Serious question, why are we giving the traitor rebels children magical fire breathing dragons? They can't gather in groups of 3 or more but you're going to allow them to be dragon riders? WHAT? Also, your kingdom is AT WAR, every person counts right? Why are you throwing them into an institution where it's either graduate or die?  That doesn't make any sense at all.

By the way, this is not an enemy to lovers book. This is a sexual tension from the start book. This is sexual tension and spicy scenes from someone who has never had either of those.
"His tongue licks into my mouth with an urgency I return, angling to take him deeper."
"I help him by kicking out off my slippers while I suck on his tongue." (She also mentions sucking on his lower lip as least twice as well. Ma'am why are you doing this?)
"His tongue glides between my parted lips to glide against mine like he has absolutely no other plans for the day but to memorize every corner of my mouth." Gross. Please stop.

The dragons:
I love dragons. Dragon lore. Dragon scales. Dragon wings. Love them. But the author seemed to not know what she wanted her dragons to be about. She talks about dragons bonding with riders as something magical, but then the dragons will just let their riders fall to their death and then bond with someone else? It's ok, they weren't strong enough to hold on. But she also mentions some dragons almost die when they lose their riders? Make up your mind which way you want this lore to be. The only reason I continued reading was because of the way Violet bonded with the dragons. I thought that would improve the story. I was wrong.

The names, my god the names in this book. Listen, sometimes keeping things simple is the better option. (Yes, I do know where her inspiration came from for the names.)

Ultimately this book had swiss cheese level plot holes, Violet was a total idiot, and Rebecca Yarros spoke to her audience like we were also idiots. I have may be able to talk myself into reading the next in the series just for the rage of it but doubt it. I feel like Rebecca wrote this book without a single understanding of what makes a fantasy book so special. This was her debut into this world and she failed.

How is this book rated so high? Are standards really this low with the romantasy genre now?

If you love fantasy/romantasy and do not like this book, drop it, do not finish it. It's ok that you don't like it. There are way better books out there.  If you liked Fourth Wing, great, I'm glad you're reading. Keep reading!
