Thoughts: I read it and I finished it, I finally read Fourth Wing! I know I'm super late to the game, but I think part of me was worried that I'd be disappointed/not love it like everyone else has, hence why I waited for hype to die down a little before picking this one up. Also, the reason that I finally picked this up was that my husband's friend read this recently and really enjoyed it, which got my husband to read it, and so I thought 'I may as well!'.

The first half felt slow for me, but I think that was a bit of my own doing as I wasn't in the biggest reading mood and so wasn't reading it consistently. But I was surprised at how much easier it was to follow and understand than I expected, which I was pleased about. I often worry that fantasy will just go straight over my head. The second half however went by a lot quicker as I got more into the story and I really started to enjoy it a lot more, and then of course I loved the ending.

All in all, I can understand why people love this book so much, but personally I don't love it as much as others. I still highly recommend it and will definitely pick up Iron Flame at some point. I'm glad to now know what everyone has been talking about!

4 stars

I enjoyed this book. Was it mind-blowingly amazing? No. Did it have anything unique in the Fantasy genre? No. But it was a lot of fun to read and very addicting. For me, I enjoyed it because it reminded me a lot of Divergent, which is a fav of mine (nostalgia perhaps?)

I only have a few minor complaints which didn't really change my opinion of the story but they were still in my mind as I read.

First, her mother is absolutely crazy. I can shrug off everything that she did to Violet as me not knowing her backstory, but omg what a crazy mother.
Second, why did every side character need their own name? Not even just a first name, but also a last name. And then they get mentioned once 7 chapters after they were introduced and then they fade into nothingness or they die. It's not worth my brain power. This entire book is easy reading, don't make me remember obscure character's names.
Third, everyone needs to check their attitude. How come everyone gives unlimited sass to everyone around them???
SpoilerThe students talking bad about the dragons IN FRONT OF THE DRAGONS was the silliest thing I've ever read. Like please hold your tongue. I'm glad a few died because of that.

Fourth, the sex was so funny.
SpoilerWhy does everything have to break and be destroyed? It's giving Twilight.

Fifth,
SpoilerDain's "betrayal" barely felt like a betrayal. I didn't care that he had done that, because I felt like it was pretty obvious something needed to happen to boost the plot.

Sixth,
SpoilerLiam's death was sad, yes, and I understand that that's why people hate Dain for betraying Violet, but honestly his death didn't hit me too much. I really enjoyed him as a character and I was hoping that we would see more of his development but obvs that won't happen. I feel like his death would've been way more impactful if we knew his hopes and dreams. I completely forgot he had a sister. If Rhiannon died, I would've been so sad, way more sad than what I felt for Liam.

Seventh, the buildup to the big twist was not bad! But, I was hoping for something a little more political?
SpoilerI was hoping that Xaden's smuggling would cause a rift between the two countries, but the Venin just pop up like booooo. Idk it felt really random.

Besides all that, it was enjoyable to read. I will be reading the second book, and probably all the books.

Read for the 2024 Fantasy Bingo

It’s like Acotar with dragons for teenagers. Pretty solid

Love. Hate. Sense of duty. Intrigue. Lust. Passion. Anticipation. Growth. I loved this book for everything it is and isn’t. While the storyline is mainly Violet and her dragon bonds, my favorite character to read was Xaden, not for all the “shadow daddy” reasons, but for the complexity of his character and the traits we learn about along the way. Everyone should want to have someone like Xaden in their life who protects what and who he loves over anything. I also enjoyed the dragons and their sass along the way, though I do kind of want the dragons to have a prequel storyline of their own. Now with that said I did give this 4 stars because some of the writing was more YA then I was anticipating. For the situations that occur at Basgiath I felt like the characters should have had more maturity as far as handling certain situations. Overall I did enjoy the book up to the very end which …. Yes …. Is a cliff hanger. So be ready to read Book 2 as soon as this is finished.
