Stark angefangen, stark nachgelassen.

4.5 stars! I thoroughly enjoyed Kingdom of the Wicked, and the 370 pages absolutely flew by, I probably could have read this in one sitting.

I really enjoyed the world-building in this that set itself apart from other YA fantasies, from its setting, to its magic system, to the magical creatures in it. The witches vs demons dynamic was really interesting, as well as how humans fit into it all. Also, I loved that this was set in Italy and loved all the descriptions of delicious FOOD!!!

The romance between Emilia and Wrath in this was also quite excellent. Their chemistry was off the charts from the start, fulfilling some of my favourite tropes like enemies to lovers, slow burn and forced proximity. The inevitable "conflict" that occurs in the relationship was also really well done, and was an actual plot device rather than just an excuse to break them up like a lot of authors tend to write it.

The way this ended was MEANNN though, I am absolutely chomping at the bit to pick up [b:Kingdom of the Cursed|52772417|Kingdom of the Cursed (Kingdom of the Wicked, #2)|Kerri Maniscalco|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1613554873l/52772417._SX50_.jpg|73131089]!

I loved this book.

I love Kerri Maniscalco and her writing.

I love this book.

I love Wrath most of all.

Let me explain:

Compared to the intense detail in Stalking Jack The Ripper, this series is more focused on the dark emotions that a murdered loved one can bring in people, fighting the sinful emotions and love that the path brings, and wanting revenge. The way the characters are written is easily conceivable and the way the story flows makes one want to stay invested.

Emilia is not the smartest main character. She can also be aggravating. And I enjoy that - cause let's be honest, most people don't have five-hundred plans piled up and the deets on everyone and everything. She's just a twin who saw her twin's murdered body and swore for revenge, no matter what. She's not a genius, and doesn't know a lot of powerful spells (cause Nona freaking sucks!), but she has a summoning paper and a heart for vengeance.

Emilia being aggravating makes me want to keep reading - to see how she can fix her mistake or what she will do when she get's herself in trouble. Which she does. A lot. Emilia finds it hard to trust anyone - which I can't blame her - but her distrust leads her to make a lot of mistakes. A lot.
She isn't all-powerful and has a hard time fighting demons. She only barely manages to slip one past Greed, and hasn't managed to do anything on her own against Envy. Fell easily to Lust and can't escape Wrath.

Wrath...
I freaking love him.

Black hair - yes. Amazing eyes - yes. Best body - of course. Cold, slightly humorous personality - yes.
Multiple layers of emotions - yes. Is it hard to decipher everything about him - of course.

I always like a handsome male lead that makes your heart spin but also has a lot of layers to him. Wrath may be the hottest male character in the series so far, and I may be a sucker for brunettes, but I enjoy his personality a whole lot.

He's confident in himself and his abilities, and knows when he needs some extra help. He isn't eager to trust Emilia, and at times hates her, but will follow the rules of his bond to the T. Will help Emilia and confide in her just a tad the secrets of the Demons - but not enough to really tell us much information. He has no reason to save Emilia but does so anyways, and even after being banished to the summon circle, he still decides to stick by her side and help her. He warms up to Emilia bit by bit but is still hesitant to tell her everything in fear of losing her trust.

Which he kind of loses because Emilia was stupid.

Wrath has secrets up his sleeves and every reason to not help Emilia. But he still does - and we won't find out right now. Because now Emilia sold her soul to Pride.

Wrath does his best to keep his true self hidden, and now we need to find out whether he cares for Emilia or was it all a ploy to just get her soul. I personally think he started to care, even though it shouldn't be in his nature to care for a witch, but it was happening. And Emilia was stupid enough to run off and sell her soul to Pride because of revenge.
(though I am excited to be introduced to Pride).

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the way it kept pulling me back in. I love Wrath, hate Envy and Nona, and although I am annoyed by Emilia I still like her character.

I cannot wait to start Kingdom of the Cursed and read what will happen between the Devil, Prince of Wrath, and Emilia Maria di Carlo.

i hope she ends up w wrath :)

Fucking amazing.

I have to say when I started this book I wasn't sure what to expect, I mostly got it because I liked the authors other work. I did enjoy it, it was full of adventure and I really enjoyed learning more about Hell, magic and demons. I enjoyed the setting of this book, it takes place in Italy, I'm not quite sure of the time period but its definitely historical rather than modern. Emilia was an interesting character but I felt her personality was a bit all over the place. It was hard to get a feel on what she was truly like. At times she is very oblivious but at other times she is tricking the demon princes. She definitely gets darker towards the end of the book. I was surprised by the lack of romance in this book, but having a demon prince being a romantic interest would have been a bit annoying for me. I was just expecting an enemies to lovers type romance because of the blurb! It did have a level of murder mystery to it which I really liked.

so good

#1: Kingdom of the Wicked ★★☆☆☆

Blood and bones! What a disappointment this was!
I must start this review saying that I have been a fan of Kerri's since Stalking Jack the Ripper came out, and I was really invested in this book when it was announced. Now that I have finally had time to read it, I find myself truly disappointed.

First of all, this book was a great chunck of telling and not showing. With the main character, Emilia, being told everything she didn't know at any given time. Conversations looked like interrogations at times.
Secondly, her anger at being lied to by Wrath in regards of their marriage bond made no sense since it had been her own spell that had created the bond. So either the character was so stupid she said words she didn't understand, or the author expected the readers to not know Latin so as to make this some great plot twist. Alas, the plot point fell flat.
Lastly, the story felt disjointed, scenes breaking from one another, feeling rushed and pointless at times, as if the editing process of them had been messy and left unfinished.

That said, the thing that bugs me the most is how the plot of this book is eerily familiar to the Vampire Girl Series by Karpov Kinrade. Sure, the main character and her family are not the same, and their motivations vary, but the princes of hell and their houses, even their interactions with each other, are quite the same. That last conversation between Envy and Wrath was almost word by word reminiscent of a scene in Vampire Girl.
It truly nags at me the wrong way.

Plus, it really hurts to see how her writing style has declined from the first book she published until now. As it did with Escaping from Houdini this feels like she paid too much mind to an author friend of hers (if you know, you know) and that influenced her writing to the point where it doesn't feel like hers anymore, yet it sounds terribly like something that other author would write. I really see no other explanation for it.
