He lived an incredibly hard journey. I think there wasn’t a ton of emotional insight but I really enjoyed the writing and I am in awe of his fortitude.

North to Paradise is a memoir by a Ghanaian man who writes of his harrowing migration from his small village in Ghana to “The land of the whites.” This is an amazing story which I highly recommend. It’s a short 170 pages, finished in just a few hours. There’s more I’d like to say about this incredible memoir in a day or two.

Short, but not sweet. An amazing story of survival in the worst of odds for this African immigrant. I love Ousman's positive attitude and determination, and the excellent work he is doing now for his community.

compelling nonfiction
I don’t generally read nonfiction and I chose this book intentionally as a departure from my typical selection. I’m so glad I did. This is a story that invites the reader to expand their awareness of the extreme conditions behind one immigrant’s experience. It evokes all kinds of emotion. Sadness, anger, but also tentative hope. It is an important read from an immigrant‘s perspective.

This is Ousman Umar's memoir. Umar was curious from an early age about the world outside of his small village in Ghana. After only two years of schooling he has to stop and become an apprentice. Not only does he learn about becoming a mechanic, but how to navigate the world on his own.
At the tender age of twelve he starts a 5 year journey that will eventually end in Europe.
Although I have read about these journeys from Africa to Europe before, I am glad I read it. I am also glad that the author provided a map to show his travels.
