The reader wants to count the monkeys, but other things keep getting in the way. Silly and fun illustrations reinforce number sense.

A cute and funny counting book for kids. This might not be great for a group setting, since the text instructs the reader to turn the page in certain ways, but it would be wonderful for lap-reading sessions!

Huge hit with the girls. On same level as The Book with no Pictures.

An original, interactive concept book for young as well as older readers. The endpapers are great!

I swear, every book Mac Barnett writes doubles as a lesson plan. (Think about Chloe and the Lion, Battle Bunny, and Extra Yarn for JUST ONE SECOND.) On the first page of this book, a frightful cobra has scared off all the monkeys. After turning the page ("very slowly, very carefully"), two mongoose have scared off the snake, but still there are no monkeys.

Absolutely, positively, you can use this framework to make a book with any group of children. Felt board, white board, writing workshop pages - pick the animals as a group or let everyone come up with their own. Don't forget to react - everyone knows you bang pots and pans at bears, but how do you get rid of lumberjacks?

THAT'S RIGHT. YOU SUMMON THE RHINOS.

Anything by Mac Barnett is a surefire win in my book (ha ha, get it, book????) :)
The reader is supposed to count the monkeys on each page, easy enough, right? Well, not when you have to do the extra instructions before you can turn the page! I think the person having the most fun is the person watching the kids act out all of the actions! See, Mr. Barnett gets you again!

Breaks the fourth wall in hilarious fashion. Had my niece cracking up as she read it to me.

Wherever Mac Barnett goes in his books, hilarity follows. Count the monkeys. It sounds so straightforward and simple. But it's not so simple when there is a cobra on the first page, scaring the monkeys away. Each spread following, an increasing number of animals or people chases away the previous ones, with monkeys to count always promised on the next page. Monkeys finally do show up in the end papers, dozens of them. Love that Mac Barnett!
