4.5 STARS overall 🌟🌟🌟🌟✨

I cannot read this continuously. I have to stop and breath as scenes are really uncomfortable
.First half of this book is so smart, story flows beautifully despite the technical presentation of science, psychology, physiology & sociology inputs, Koontz did a very great job at maintaining intrigue. Second half will make you feel you are not reading at all, the pace becomes so fast and plot becomes more exciting.. I just find it odd that I don't feel Paul's rage despite what happened to poor Mark. so far the most evil yes intelligent villain I've ever read.  Part 2 Chapter 6 Realization or Paul and Sam is brilliant !
Highly recommend but I warn you about some scenes.

One of my least favorite Koontz books I've read. Took much too long to get to "the good parts" and just overall, I wasn't too impressed.

This book fucked me UUUUUP in a way that will make sure I never forget it. If you have ever wanted to throw your book at a wall, be treated unfairly, and be afraid of the government, this book is for you.

Read this in a day.

I like Koontz, I like the premise and I love the old school single color covers. It’s got a TON of sexual violence in it and it just kinda sucks to read. Besides that, it never really lets up and is a good thriller. It’s just so mean and grim. Still a fan but I don’t think this one is super for me. Probably closer to a 5/10 but I’m rounding up because for all I didn’t like about it, I still read it in a day and couldn’t really put it down.

The content of the book is definitely interesting and intriguing. I am referring to the science of subliminal advertising. I was unaware of it until I read this book. The story starts off very beautifully jumping between past and present. But after you read almost 60% of the book or to be modest 75% the story becomes predictable. Its for the sake of completion you read it all. I was disappointed with the climax as I was expecting some twist like in Dan Brown's novels. Nevertheless its a good read.

Nonsense, and quite unpleasant at times, but still kind of fun

"Night Chills" by Dean Koontz, was one of the books given to me by a co-worker who knew I "liked to read". Dean Koontz is mostly a hit-or-miss author for me but I tend to like his earlier works better, probably because they are usually more of a straight forward horror story than his later work.

This novel is a bit dated, having been written in the 1970s and concerns the phenomenon of subliminal advertising, taken to the extreme where it can actually be used for mind control. Three people of varying backgrounds and motivations get together to coordinate an experiment on an isolated "company town" where the small, controlled population is subjected to the experimental technique. If the experiment works, the three stand to become all powerful (and all rich). The title of the book comes from the side effect that the experimentees get: night chills similar to flu-like symptoms.

The book was a quick read, and a page-turner. The bad guys, particularly the main inventor of the mind control technique, were far more developed than the good guys who fight back, making it a bit difficult to root for them. And, I must say, there is some pretty extreme graphic sexual scenes in this novel, mostly having to do with the main inventor abusing his new found power to get back at women for all of the grief he suffered in his youth.

In summary, not a bad Koontz novel, but not ranking at the top either.

Read this 20+ years ago and am doing some rereading. Holds up pretty well considering how long ago it was written.
