Wow! I really enjoyed this one. Feels genre-defying and completely singular. The storytelling and voice felt super unique, I haven’t read anything like this before. Loved the mythology, history and romance wrapped up in a horny little package!
Would have loved an expanded version or even a series, there’s so much this world offers and I just want to know more.

an EROTIC, gay, Asian, historical-ish, reincarnation tragic love story told across three different timelines. i enjoyed reading it and it was fun to try and figure out which character would be which in the next reincarnation/plot, but it didn’t quite grab or “get” me emotionally. the erotic scenes are memorable to say the least (razor blade blowjobs, lots of fruit imagery) and i hope they float someone’s boat (not mine). the gay Asian rave scene sounds fabulous though.
for a book supposedly about an epic love story that spans many lives and thousands of years, the romance was quite lackluster. sure, there's a lot of smut, but i was disappointed that the buildup of the romance between the emperor and his supposed beloved was so FLAT. their interactions were so shallow that i greatly doubted their so called "true feeling" for each other. i wish we had more interesting dialogues between the leads to flesh out their relationship even further.
aside from that glaring issue, i still enjoyed how unpredictable it was. though the writing can be quite....cringe at times. the plot was also interesting. i really just wanted more from the characters and their relationships with each other. the author didn't quite nail that aspect, which is truly a shame.

This book would have been incredible if it had 1 more act.
It has so many really cool ideas and interesting things to say, and as a reader I was very compelled by the three storylines and excited to see how each ended and intersected.
Unfortunately it fumbles the reveal badly with 50 pages left to go, and doesn’t really manage to recover. The book still gets its point across, barely, and I am still glad I read it, but those chapters at the end really just feel like the author ran out of time, or wordcount, and delivered a slightly embellished plot outline in lieu of the more careful (and better paced) prose of the prior 80% of the book.
