This is a very quick and really fascinating novel about past lives, romance, and sex. What’s really interesting about The Emperor and the Endless Palace is how it manages to decouple sex and romance in very true and fascinating ways. The sexual politics here are exactly that - sex as currency, as power, as something divorced from romance entirely, as something that poisons and purifies. There’s a lot of sex in this book, and it’s often not titillating, not romantic, but necessary.
I don’t think the romance itself particularly lived up to the interesting sexual dynamics here, hence the 3.5 (I didn’t believe the characters were as head over heels as the novel insists they are). But I really enjoyed a lot of this unapologetically gay novel.

This book isn’t a romance. It’s fantasy for sure, there are some elements of romance but this book is not a romance.
The vibes were solid, I would recommend it to friends, I don’t remember the MC’s names and probably won’t re-read.

i wanted to like this more than i did. love the idea but the plot did not connect to me- it felt like nothing truly happened and i did not love plum as a euphemism for asshole.
