I get teary-eyed just thinking about this book. It makes you feel...I really don't know how to describe the way it makes me feel when I read it. Hopeful, maybe. You just really need to read it to figure out the exact feeling.

I know I've read this before, but for some reason, I've never reviewed it. I have very different memories of how much I like this book (child me thought it was brilliant, 20s me thought it was weird as heck). I'm very interested to see how I feel about it now at age (redacted).
The first 3/4 of this book, I thought this was probably my least favorite of the Narnia books. It's so sad, and as I'm a grown up now, I also understand it and see the real world parallels so much better than I did when reading it as a child, or even in my 20s. So it was pretty depressing to read. But also really wonderful and beautiful, especially once you get to the ending of the story. I'm not completely convinced it's a children's book (although I did love it as a kid, so maybe I'm just too old now to remember my childlike feelings and thoughts), but it's a very good ending to the series. I'm a huge fan of Tirian, who we probably get to know best of all the Narnian kings except Edmund, and it was great to have Jill back as a main character.
Also, the dwarfs are very racist and the book a little bit racist, which you will totally get see coming if you read The Horse and His Boy and also other fantasies written around that time.

Wow wtf was that. Absolutely wild 😅 This book is definitely no longer middle grade, at least by today's standards, unless you want to have some hard conversations about slavery and the follies of capitalism (and racism, but that's not specific to this installment in the series). And that ENDING? "The holidays have begun"??? WTAH. I'm not religious, so that will colour my reception of the finale but still it doesn't feel like an awesome message for kids.
