1st of all, i beat jamie in the competition. she doesn’t know it yet but asses were eaten.
2nd of all the ending made me cry. every other book ended the same way, with everything returning back to “normal” but healthier & happier and i was not expecting this ending to be so shocking because usually the bulk of the book is shocking (or adjacent) & then the ending wraps it up nicely and this ending was the most diabolical of all the books. it was entirely melancholy and heartbreaking but also so refreshing & artistic.
also the segment about the world “ending” was actually entirely fascinating and i was geeking out over the entire thing. for one, the stars falling to Earth as people reminded me entirely of the movie Stardust which is one of my favorite movies to exist. & then the sun and moon colliding together but in a seemingly poetic and romantic way was also exceptional.
overall: the best book of the series in my opinion. not my favorite, but the best. i wish i had read all of these books as a child i would have loved them dearly.

This was an interesting way to finish the series, but I understand that Lewis wanted to keep things in line with how he sees the world ending from a Christian perspective. It is a unique and beautiful story. That being said, there were definitely some more questionable themes that appeared in this work that was absent from others, namely racism and sexism. Though this book is from the late 1950s, we are reading in the 21st century and can't overlook these. I don't find it a good excuse to not read this book to children, but rather as an opportunity to show children how the world has changed over time and what is not okay. Lewis also was wildly "progressive" in his display and condemnation of gaslighting and environmental protection. There was both good and bad here.

It was not my favorite book in the series and it had quite a few unfinished items of business (Susan just lost her whole family back in England?), but it is a children's story and as such I think it is fine.
