The Last Battle is by far the most heavy handed and dated of the Chronicles of Narnia. The other books are timeless fantasy stories where the allegory is just one aspect of larger whole. The Last Battle is Revelations Lite and comes with a helping of racism and sexism, not to mention it’s a poor conclusion to a beloved series.
I always love and appreciate C.S Lewis’ allusions and symbolisms in writing throughout the whole Chronicles of Narnia series but this book tops it off. The Last battle borrows many themes from the Bible, which include the Antichrist deceiving the world, the final judgment, the ultimate triumph of good over evil, and the creation of a new world. Now I fully understand why this is one of the best Christian Children's book series written, yet.

The religious overtones in this one were STRONG. Didn't even try to hide it in subtlety. The story itself was fun but I could see where it was going. I also know these are old books but the racism also gave me the ick. The Calormenes are the bad guys and they just so happen to be dark skinned, wear turbans, and worship "a demon". Then the dwarfs call them "Darkies"?! Really not sure that I will be sharing this series with my kid. There are so many other better fantasy stories out there.

I grew up reading Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and always hated The Last Battle. As I got older I realized this was because the Christian undertones flowing beneath the plots of the first six books suddenly become Christian overtones in this novel. The illusion of story falls away and the book becomes thinly veiled propaganda. It’s sad that such a wonderful series turns into something so cheap and disappointing.

what the helly what the helly what the hellion was that book - 2 stars only because the last like 3 chapters of the book were wild and the collapse of Narnia as the children knew it was captivating. Them all going together to Aslan’s country was beautifully written, especially the reunions of characters from previous books. However, 🗣️ SUSAN DESERVES BETTER 🗣️ and the outright racism was insane and incredibly disappointing ✋🏼
