A great conclusion to the Narnia series—probably my favorite of the seven—and a good look at Lewis' eschatology (alongside The Great Divorce of course).

This book made me feel rather queasy. The dark-skinned people are portrayed as nothing but cruel and barbaric. The only one of them who is redeemed has had to convert to Narnian faith. The English kids felt the need to educate the dwarves because they are the chosen ones and therfore right apparently and why on earth did Susan have to be vilified like that?!

Here ends my re-read of the series, read in chronological order. This is the tale of the battle held at the end of Narnia. The books are very much of their time, and of the man who wrote them. You will find racism and sexism when reading with a current perspective, or at least a paucity of positive representation for brown people, and old-fashioned attitudes to women. I know, from experience, that children can read the series without noticing allegory, or Christian symbolism, and I don’t think it pays to imagine every element is a direct reference to something in our world. Given that I am culturally, theologically and temperamentally suited to this series, and other work by C.S.Lewis, and that I don’t need the things I read to match my views exactly, these books have given me much joy and hope over the years.
