jeez louise

A pretty lackluster ending to the series.

Lewis continues his caricatures of non-Christian views throughout, which was expected of course since it is the tone through the series. It's disappointing to really grasp this as an adult where such things were easily overlooked as a kid. As a victim of Christian views and a Christian community growing up, it's almost horrifying (in the older, Lovecraftian or Poe-ian sense) some of the messaging here.

As a story, though, it wrapped up cleanly the characters I grew fond of throughout and ends bittersweetly. The middle of the book about the deception by Shift I think is worth re-reading by those who cannot see such similar fake messaging and strategic half truths in our current political climate, but the tension comes and goes in the story quickly.

One remaining nit for me is the almost passing thought about Susan who is "no longer a friend of Narnia". She's depicted unrealistically as a denialist about all her previous adventures in favor of her current adult life (which may include, *gasp*, some sexuality?). The parallel being made for the Christian deconverted is yet another embarrassing caricature.

I'm glad to have finally put this series to bed. If I were to suggest it to today's young children, I would want to ensure a discussion afterward about some of these characterizations, but it's likely that they would perhaps overlook them as I did when younger.

Far and away my favourite of all the Narnia books - which is, in itself, saying something!

I find it profoundly refreshing for my soul as well as being wonderfully written by one of the best writers of the English language - in my humble opinion!
