Far and away my favourite of all the Narnia books - which is, in itself, saying something!

I find it profoundly refreshing for my soul as well as being wonderfully written by one of the best writers of the English language - in my humble opinion!

3.5-4 ⭐️

I don’t know what I was expecting the last book of this series to be… but whatever it was it wasn’t THAT! 🫠

Like, don’t get me wrong, a perfectly sweet joyful ending in its own way. But also… like HUH!? That’s it??? 😭
Very C. S. Lewis, but definitely heavier on the Christianity front this time but just tossing away subtle imagery and being very blatant with it. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing! I think everyone knows going into this that Lewis was a firm believer and that it’s a common strong theme in all his works. It was just that after all the other books to kind of suddenly be really smacked in the face with it was a bit much. Not to mention the old constant racism of that decade 😬

More 3.5 stars than 4, The Last Battle is a fitting end to the series, but also is one of the worst entries in it. The majority of the plot is fine, just not up to the standard of the series. This book is really all about the last few chapters where Lewis wraps up the series. The ending succeeds in bringing together all the familiar faces (except notably one) and it is a happy ending that many will enjoy. However, where I think the novel faltered, and the series as a whole is weakest, is in Lewis' world building. As the series continued, the world of Narnia got bigger and more complicated without getting more interesting. The stories were always solid, but the world itself was at its best when it was at its simplest, in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. All in all, a largely forgettable novel that is saved by an interesting ending to wrap up the series.

Enjoyed reading the entire series with my daughter.

The term is over: the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning.

Well, I remember this as one of the best books I ever read back when I was a lad... but now it's not nearly as bright of a star. I mean, I still enjoyed it a lot, but the indescribably glories in the last chapter, I guess, aren't nearly as wonderful to me now. I still like the apocalyptic vision of the end of times (and the events leading up to it), but what happens next isn't quite so grand. C.S. Lewis does have a gift for telling a moral story without pushing too far into preaching, and I do like a lot of the ways he comes up with describing things, but the characters are far flatter than I remember them. I'm thinking of rereading the rest of the series again soon.
