The middle part of the book is a solid 8/10 and some of the best writing of the entire series. However, the last quarter of the book is a slog and a very unsatisfying ending to a 7 book series.

I was hoping for more when I started this series.

The end! 80% of the book was quite slow going, but it picked up towards the end.

As CS Lewis does, lots & lots of allegories. I’m just glad I’m done this series & I can say I read it. I’m just not a fan of these! They are not incredibly interesting or attention grabbing. I don’t think I’ll read again anytime soon… or ever!

Some twentyplus years after reading this I can't--and won't--vouch for it's actually quality. The high rating is for personal reasons: parts of the discussion at the end of this novel remain vivid in my mind all these years later, and I realize now that they quietly upended several fundamental religious beliefs I held at that time. And within the space of those tiny, initial cracks I can locate the person I later became and am today.
