I really love Picoult, and I loved the beginning of this story and the idea of it - an 18 year old aspberger's sufferer who is obsessed with forensic science is arrested after the death of his tutor. What I didn't like is that I thought the twist at the end was predictable from at least the middle of the book - why didn't anyone ask him straight out whether he did it, since he is literal and always tells the truth? Some lovely aspects, some great characters, a great thinking moral dilemma book that made me think about how I would deal with a situation like this, but a bit of a let down at the end.
I love Picoult's writing style, but this book was far too predictable. I kept waiting for her usual "twist," but it never happened.
2nd Read: Just as great the second time. Read my first review below!
1st Read: What a great JP book! Kept me interested the whole way through. I enjoyed the plot and characters. The story was told from multiple characters, which I like, and was easy to follow. House Rules is over 500 pages but I read through it rather quickly once I started.

An interesting storyline which kept me thinking. The struggles which were experienced by Jacob and his family, while exaggerated, gave the reader a real insight into living with ASD and the everyday simplicities we all take for granted - choosing what to eat, choosing what to wear and mixing things up to keep our days interesting - all situations which we find ourselves in regularly which a person with ASD could find extremely difficult. I found Jacob's literal interpretations quite endearing such as 'Waive your rights' and they helped make him a likeable character. I did think the book was very long though and wonder if a bit less 'autism/aspergers' jargon would have helped as this sometimes took over the actual storyline a bit rather than supported it.

Very slow going and I figured it out pretty quickly. Overall not a bad read.
This was a brilliantly written novel with a lot of intricate details that were well thought out and put together in a precise manner to make this book what it is. I was able to figure out exactly what happened long before anyone else did, and I found myself frustrated at the ignorance of the characters and their inability to listen and understand what they're being told.
Well done, Ms. Picoult! You've written another great novel!
