an experience that changes a person, but I feel like you can get the same message out of other sources and not get traumatized in the process. do not touch if you have a sensitive stomach.

From start to finish, this book took me about four hours to read, as much as I wanted to put it down after some parts. This book has very gruesome descriptions of gore and cannibalism and if you cannot handle it, I would skip this one. It was very good, and very sad and bleak.

So I was told this book was a true dystopian novel. Honestly it had a lot of potential. The characters had potential, the main idea of the society had potential, but in the end it felt like the author had a bunch of separate ideas for a book and squished them together. Like the human hunting reserve where they hunted a celebrity who was in debt? That just sounded like the main plot of a desperate book. I was also disappointed in the characters, when I started the book I assumed I would get to know Marcos and why he does things and how he does things, but I still have no clue how he thinks and why he acts. All I got was that he’s vegetarian, he likes beer, he misses his wife, he misses his dead baby and he’s a creep. All throughout the book, he would explain how everyone else was sick but then literally does the exact same thing as everyone else. I guess that could be interpreted as the meaning of the book, but it’s a bit of a cop-out. It also felt very gory for little to no reason. It honestly made me think that the author just wanted to write something with every trigger warning possible and the best way to do it was to choose humans. I would not be surprised if the author chose humans because the book wouldn’t have been well received if they had gone into as much detail on livestock farming and slaughtering. It made me think of those kinds of vegans. The ending was basically ten pages and didn’t make sense when it came to the characters’ arcs. Kinda disappointed as I was told the ending was what truly made the book (aka the book is boring but the end is shocking). Overall meh writing and underdeveloped plot and characters.

An absolutely horrifying book that I read in one sitting. It felt impossible to put down. I agree with another review I saw saying that you had to suspend some disbelief about the world building. Some of the plot elements like the Scavengers and the widespread conformity felt unrealistic, but other parts, like how different generations would react to this new world, felt very real. Many parts of this book, including the ending, absolutely broke my heart. You kind of feel for Marcos but also know he's 100% a villain in this world too.

This book is haunting. So gory and graphic. Calls out how disgusting humans can be. The way that people treated humans (mainly women, and lower class members of society) that were discarded or chosen to be "special meat" was insane. They even bred "heads" -- "special meat". Some even "sacrificed" themselves, but the readers were raised to question if it's really sacrifice; "a sacrifice generally requires consent from the person being sacrificed..." But what really got me was how easy it was for people to transition from animal meat to human meat because of the supposed overpopulation, impoverity, etc. I don't know how anyone can justify cannibalism. It seemed like the transition took place through a matter of months! That's so short! Definitely seemed like many were very prepared. The things you do to live... and what that means to people is astronomical. This book raised many hard questions and reflections. I was so uncomfortable most of the time and rightfully so. So glad I read this. Definitely recommend to those that can handle gore and analyze through it. Definitely took time to read. Was slow in some parts too but didn't hate it.
