Better than the first volume, I was fully engrossed in the story, though the main character started to act a little like a trope of a typical teenager that I see (and get annoyed with) in most YA books. I hope that the next volume steers away from that.

A great follow-up to Volume 1. Develops plot further, adds new wrinkles. Maika is a bad ass.

So I picked the next volume up on a whim at my local library...and I'm kinda glad I did. I'm starting to see why people like this series. Dont get me wrong, the problems from the first volume are still here (dense amounts of lore and jokes that fall kinda flat), but with the premise and world more or less established the story spends some time examining Maika's relationships (past and present) and how they've affected her current relationships (name with her companions). I was thrown for a loop with how rough her mother was, but it helps contextualize why she's so rough around the edges and why she constantly keeps people at arms length. I really enjoyed seeing her dynamic with her Tiger-Arcanic godfather. It was refreshing to see Maika interact with someone she genuinely cares about and not push them away.

We also get some further backstory on the lovecraftian parasite that's bonded with Maika. Zinn genuinely feels terrible about all the people it's hurt and through flashbacks we see it display a wide variety of emotions. It was surprisingly humanizing and made it feel more like an actual character in the plot instead of a talking plot mcguffin.

Throw in some more wonderful character designs (that shark lady is AWESOME) and some fun ghost pirate shenanigans and you've got a really fun rewarding romp for people who made it through volume 1. If you weren't a fan of volume 1 I won't promise all the problems go away, but give volume 2 a shot. You might have more fun.

I just love this series. The art is jaw dropping gorgeous. The story is multifaceted & draws you in from page one. I can’t wait to pick of Vol 3
