4.25 AVERAGE

If you enjoyed the first volume of this comic series, you’ll definitely enjoy volume 2 as well! The quality of the art remained, and we were also shown Takeda’s skills regarding other elements this time around as well as a good part of the adventure in this volume takes place on the water (I didn’t even notice the hint on the cover in the form of a wave which reminds me a lot of the famous Japanese tsunami painting ((The Wave of Kanagawa))! I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love it when stories take place on ships, and on/around an ocean. Add in beautifully-illustrated sea creatures and I’m in heaven!

Being transported back into Liu and Takeda’s world again was absolutely great. I read Monstress Volume 1 last July and absolutely loved it (you can read my review here), and I’ve been waiting for the next volume (quite impatiently) ever since! If I didn’t make it clear enough already, I love Takeda’s art style. I also adore Liu’s storytelling skills, as well as her writing. It’s one thing to be a good storyteller (or maybe I should say story-creator or thinker-upper), and quite another to be able to effectively put these stories into words.

I found this volume to contain a little less horror than the first one, which was fine, because I kept reading the first volume at night and getting nightmares, haha. I’m a baby though, so don’t let that scare you off! The characters which we met in the first volume remained consistent in this part of the story (and I was very happy to see them again), and I also really liked a lot of the new characters which were added.

The pacing of the story was also perfect, with enough answers being given to some of the questions we were made to ask in the first volume. We are also left asking new questions by the end of volume 2, though, and I’m not sure if I can sane for another year of waiting for more Monstress! Highly recommended to those who have read the first volume, as well as those who are hearing about this comic for the first time. If you enjoy fantasy, humanoid creatures, politics, war, magic, and a dash of horror, this graphic novel is for you. I was pulled back into this story from the very first page due to Liu and Takeda’s joint efforts, and I’m so very glad that I requested this comic for review. I own the first volume, and will be purchasing the second volume as soon as I can justify it to myself!
adventurous dark fast-paced

I enjoy the art of the book and how complex the characters are. The story is a little confusing but after each volume the story makes sense.

This series continues to fucking rule and I continue to be obsessed with it. From the art style to the themes explored, I just intensely love everything going on here, it truly feels like it was made for me personally. If you like horror, lots of lore, female rage and breathtaking art. then I implore you to check this out. Sure, this probably isn’t perfect and I can see where it may falter, but it ticks all of my favorite boxes so perfectly that I can’t get myself to care.

The art in this series is 5/5. It is, without question, the most beautiful series I've ever read. The story, though? Meh. 2/5.

This might be my favorite thing I've read all year. Holy shit, this series is INCREDIBLE. I read all 7 volumes in about a week, so I will not be posting individual reviews for each. This will be the review for volumes 1-3.

If you know me, you know I love a murderous woman. From page one, I fell in love with Maika. From the very beginning, you know what she's about, and I'M WITH HER. All the other characters are just as complex as Maika, with their own motivations, backstories, and personalities. No one is one dimensional in this story, and they all live in a grey area between good and evil. No one character stands out at the "bad" or "good" guy. The bad guys are given moments of empathy and kindness, and the good guys often make terrible and horrific decisions. This dynamic of characters makes for such a compelling story. I found myself rooting for all of them and none of them while reading.

The world that has been created is also SO incredibly unique. There's still so much of the world that has yet to be uncovered, but each corner that has been revealed has a wealth of history, traditions, religions, and ways of governing. Some of it was hard to keep track of, but that's often because I'm a poor reader, not because the author/illustrator has delivered the world poorly.

The plot never stops moving in this story. There's constantly another secret to be revealed or a major twist that takes our characters in an entirely new direction. The story is dark, ruthless, and gruesome. I loved every second of it.

Finally, I've never really read a graphic novel before, and this book really just made me appreciate the work it takes to create one. The level of craft it takes to tell a story in both pictures and dialogue is incredible! I will be picking up more just because of this one! I can not recommend this more highly!

Really interesting instalment! It was nice to see some backstory and now more about the world. I still can't get over how beautiful the art is! I can't wait to read the next volume.

Raising this to 5 stars upon reread. I absolutely love this comic so far.

This is a long-awaited sequel for me as I adored the first volume in this world, and the second one was also brilliant. I feel like a lot of the unanswered questions raised by Vol. 1 get some expansion in this volume and although we're still left wondering a lot by the end, I feel more satisfied with the story too.

The artwork of this is BEAUTIFUL. No other way to put it. I just love the details that are so intricate and well-considered from the amazing architecture and landscapes through to the small characters who roam in the back-ground and flesh out the world. All brilliant, and definitely my favourite series in terms of art.

In the end I gave this a solid 4.5*s and would throughly recommend the series. I fully intend to keep reading it too :)

I loved the world and story introduced in the first volume, and this only makes me more drawn to both. The art is so beautiful it is almost hypnotic, and the unwinding story is compelling and rich. The dynamic among the main trio is wonderful; I am absolutely in LOVE with Kippa and Ren, and I'm excited to see Maika's character develop. I will definitely be continuing the story!
