Arden does it again. Book 2 in the Winternight Trilogy was somehow better than book 1. Vasya is a heroine that anyone would love. She’s strong, capable, humble, and compassionate. She has no special skills other than her persistence, her stubbornness, and her larger than life heart.

I want to come back to this book at some point, I'm just a terminal mood reader.

For some reason, this one didn't align with me as well as the first book. I think it had to do with the different setting, which I guess I just didn't enjoy as much. In the first book, the feeling of the vast and snowy wilderness, and the reclusive lives of the main family just felt so scenic and comforting.

Parts of the story also felt a bit... disjointed? I think that is a pacing issue in this one particularly. Vasya's story and character arc felt a bit one-dimensional at times, but I still found myself rooting for her and being proud of her for chasing the life that she wants, not the one everyone expects of her. And that she stands for her beliefs, even though nobody around her believes in her. She's been through a lot and I hope things get better for her after all this.
There were some particular emotional/hard hitting moments in the story at the end, which I felt happened quite fast, and then everything suddenly tied up pretty neatly for just the middle book in a trilogy. But overall, I really still love this world and its characters, and I am very curious to see where the trilogy ends up. The way this author blends the mythology of the chyerti and Christianity and politics together is wonderful.
