The story follows Edna Pontellier, a young, married woman with children on a journey towards finding and living her true self, but struggling to achieve sexual and personal emancipation at a time where women did not have ownership of their own bodies. My favourite character is Edna Pontellier because she is a feminist icon or her time, and my least favourite character is Léonce Pontellier because he embodies a patriarchal society and the oppression that women faced. I recommend this book because I read it for a University module and I’m so glad I was introduced to this story as it shows that just because women were treated a certain way in the past, doesn’t mean all women were content with their treatment. I also think it is a beautiful love story with a tragic ending, but the only possible ending for a woman of Edna’s time. I’m going to write 2000 words on this book now. “I’ve been working like a machine, and feeling like a lost soul.”
