Paradise Rot is a bizarre but transportive read. Don't go into this book expecting strong plot or character development, instead this book mostly succeeds in drawing you in with it's deeply sensory and disquieting prose. If you're looking for a quick read that will remind you of those eerie places where all your worst thoughts seem to manifest in the physical, you will like this book.

Felt very symbolic, I feel like I would have to go back and analyse it deeply to fully appreciate what I have just read. If that's someone's thing with books, they'd have a field day with this one. I enjoyed the premise and the grossness of the book. The slipping from reality-based writing to non-reality in the house was kind of cool. I would have liked it more if it was longer, maybe if more detail was given to what was *actually* happening, like with Bunny by Mona Awad! The shortness of the book meant there wasn't time for reason and instead it leant heavily on implications and symbolism. Still was good tho. Very poetic. Very pee

Overall, the text does deliver on atmospheric queer desire themes. I felt Jo's character may have been overly stimulated easily because they're not physically intimate with anyone and are still a virgin and that hidden desire seeps outwards into every day things.

It felt like I was reading a book about a typical international student who goes to NYC for college and tries to find housing, fit in and make friends. Up until the point were the brewery and her roommate begin to suck the life out of her and consume her movements, thoughts, actions and memories. There is a growing sense of gothic and body horror and grotesque rotting imagery in the text that migrates from the apples onto the old, rundown, mold filled brewery building they live in.

I struggled with Prim's character and whether or not his character existed within the real world or in between where I suppose Jo's roommate was.

Her attachment to the building was unhealthy and extreme; could her consistent fatigue and sickness be linked to the building continuously draining her? Maybe

I liked some elements of it and thought it was interesting enough, but I didn't like it as much as I had hoped. Pretty quick read tho.
