It's gonna be a no from me for this one.

A Fatal Affair started out well enough. Double murder, missing kid, secrets, lies, betrayals. Typical thriller tropes, yet executed well. As the story went on, it got more interesting, and I became sucked in more and more. I couldn't pinpoint what was going on, and I liked the feeling of being as lost as the detectives. Man, I love a good procedural.

However, as much as the story progressed, it also seemed to be going nowhere fast. Not to mention that I had every single twist already figured out. I was hoping and praying that I wasn't right...I very much was. That's not why I'm giving this book 2 stars, though. No, it's because the twists were over the top, and the fairy tale ending was a bit too much for me. I know it's fiction, but can we have some reality... please.

This is my second A.R Torre book. I didn't like the last one either. I think I'll stop here. It was a fast-paced and bingebale read, so I'll give it that. The concept was interesting, and I would've gotten a higher rating from me if it weren't for the soap opera plot twists.
fast-paced

A.R. Torre's "A Fatal Affair" throws us into a world brimming with potential for drama and intrigue. Nora Kemp finds herself torn between two strikingly different men: the charming Hollywood film star, Hugh Iverson, and his enigmatic, rebellious twin brother. When Trent is discovered dead in Hugh's opulent mansion alongside an unidentified woman, the stage is set for a tangled web of lies, secrets, and murder. While the premise held immense promise, drawing me in with its glamorous backdrop and complex relationships, the execution ultimately left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. I eagerly anticipated a significant plot twist, a moment that would seamlessly connect all the disparate threads, but the narrative concluded rather abruptly, leaving a sense of unfulfilled potential. Although the book offered glimpses of excitement, the overall feeling was one of being slightly unpolished and rushed, preventing it from reaching the impactful crescendo I had hoped for.

A Fatal Affair by A. R. Torre

Dark, sinister, intense, tale filled with twists and turn ~ truly thought provoking and rather creepy.

What I liked:
* The detectives and police procedural aspects
* The setting – since I grew up in the area
* That I read “twin” and had an immediate inkling what would happen
* That my inkling proved true but there was a whole lot more than just that premonition
* The twisted childhood some of the characters lived through and finding out how what they experienced impacted them as adults
* That I didn’t really LIKE the twins or Nora – and was fine with that
* Finding out, eventually, how the twin died and why
* Learning why the woman died who was found with the twin, finding out what happened to her son, and thinking about what would happen to her family in the future
* Finishing the book

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about “love” and how it means many different things to those who use the word – some really warped things

NOTE: I have enjoyed other books by this author more but that probably has more to do with never really warming up to and liking the three main characters than due to the quality of the writing as the plot, pacing, setting, and writing were excellent.

Did I enjoy this book? Kind of
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – this is my honest review.

This was an enjoyable ready. Even though the twist was predictable, I had fun seeing how it would all unfold. It was easy to read/listen to since the chapters were short. It honestly flew by. The story wasn't anything too crazy, in my opinion. It has just enough insanity, but not too much thrill.

I've been making my way through A.R. Torre's backlist and I haven't been let down too bad. She's definitely one of the authors I'll turn to when I need a quick popcorn read that easy to digest.
