This wasn't bad! It had potential, and I think with a few more years of experience under their belt, the author could've turned this into a really heart-wrenching and evocative story. Unfortunately it was just kinda basic and middle of the road YA.
Given that suicidal ideation is the central theme here, I needed more emotion and connection to these characters. I felt like I was viewing them from a distance throughout, and it's missing feeling and connective tissue.
It's super forgettable and I just didn't really care, y'know?

Gives the illusion that finding a significant other is the cure all for depression. Simply not true, and just because you're a YA novel doesn't mean you're required to have a teenage love affair in your book. Interesting premise, but poorly executed. The Proust quote sums up the entirety of the book, and the romantic relationship sullies the overall experience lessening depression to the point where its insulting.

Such a beautiful book in such a heartbreaking way, beautifully written. Admittedly it took me a while to get into but once I was half way through I couldn’t put it down - it has so many triggers for someone who may feel the same way, but it gives such a true feeling insight into mental health.

I could have been the main character of this book. I live near the Ohio River, I also feel suffocated by my area, and I also once planned to jump into the river. This book hit really hard for me. It made me very emotional and I felt like I was living through the main character.

It was cute and heartfelt. I'm not sure how I feel about each of their personalities. Aysel's changed a lot in this book. I felt like I wanted more from Roman. He was really sweet, but kind of confusing at times. The end sorry to say was predictable. After about page 200 I knew neither of them would die. It's too sweet of a book to have them both die. I wasn't in love with them or the story. It was harder to connect with the characters. 3.8 stars

WOW. This was a beautiful book. I loved it a lot, even though at times I found it almost unbearable to read because of how sad and dark it was. I wanted to fly through it but I had to put it down and collect myself a couple of times because of how sad it was. It was a kind of book that makes you feel all of the feels on the spectrum. I don't want to go too in depth about it because I feel like that would ruin the magic of this book, but I think it's amazing.

My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga was one of those books that I wanted to read the instant I heard about. It just sounded like something I’d love. Maybe that combined with great early reviews made my expectations too high, because I just didn’t love the book the way I wanted to.
I really have some readers guilt with this one. I seem to be the only person that didn’t think it was absolutely incredible. I think my biggest issue is that I never really felt a big connection to Aysel and Roman. I didn’t dislike them…I just didn’t have a lot of feelings for them. Roman’s story was heartbreaking, but I feel like Aysel’s life wasn’t really as bad as she thought. I know her eyes were clouded with depression, but it was frustrating to me that she didn’t see these things right in front of her. Maybe I have trouble with books where the main characters are contemplating suicide. I have in the past, so maybe it’s an issue for me and not really the book’s fault.
Despite all that I still found My Heart and Other Black Holes to be a compelling read. I had to know how Aysel and Roman’s lives turned out (or didn’t). That kept me turning pages. It’s also a pretty fast read.
So, while it wasn’t my favorite book, it was an interesting one. I’ll certainly read future books my Jasmine Warga.
