This book was a pleasant surprise for me. I didn’t love the first one but I did think this second book was an improvement and the plot was intriguing. The plot twist of

Harald being a child of Loki and a shapeshifter was a huge revelation and turning point that I did not see coming, which helped raise the rating.

I continue to just not relate to Freya as a character and I do prefer to feel a connection and route for the FMC. I think Freya’s anger and rage being so close to the surface is just a trait I struggle to understand and I find her a bit frustrating at times though less self centered than in the first book.

Toward the end, I did like how Freya began to adapt her magic around being the child of two gods and used the different parts of her magic to escape capture and death and to raise an army. While I didn’t love that she could curse so many people so easily, the fear and need to contain and manage that power added to the plot.
