Holds up quite well for a book published in the 80s. Gotta love JAK and her quirky characters. Glad she mentioned this one in her last newsletter. :)

3,5 stars. Could've been even 4 if I were in a better mood ;)
What can I say? As far as Krentz's books for harlequin and other publishers of the type go, this one was pretty good. It lacked maybe a little more electricity between heroes. I mean, were was the suspence in their relationship? But it was a fine quick read.

Not the best book i've read, but decent. Will definitely give the author another read.

This book didn't live up to Krentz's usual reputation at all. It's simply a slightly better written romance novel.

2.5* Dated, simplistic romance. Decent enough, but far from JAK's best effort.

When she married Cormick (Gray) Grayson, Amber thought it was the meeting of minds. She knew that she didn't want a marriage with passion, she had been burned by that in her last relationship. So a quiet, almost business-like marriage of contentment would work just fine.
Gray was ready to bide his time. He knew Amber had been burned but he knew that he could bring the flames of her passion back to life (ew). A business trip is just the place to celebrate their honeymoon (or something). But the property he's reviewing isn't quite up to snuff and the owner isn't above a little intimidation.
Very much a product of its time. Good for nostalgia but maybe not for today's readers.

I'm not sure why, but I really like marriage of convenience stories, especially when they provide time in the story for the characters to develop a relationship and get to know and care for each other. The sexual politics were a little old-fashioned at times ("conjugal duties") but it was written 25 years ago and is less regressive than some of the stuff I see on tv now (*cough*GOP primaries*cough*).

Anyway, it's surprisingly sweet and generally funny thanks to the banter about cowboy poetry that runs throughout.

I liked both characters and I liked that while Grayson knew he wanted to be with Amber early on, he respected her boundaries and went out of his way not to make her feel pressured or coerced. I also liked how they expressed their needs and desires and listened to each other (except for the "suspense" thing at the end... but that whole plot point was kind of goofy).

Overall, if you're interested in JAK's early works, this would be a good one to start with.

Contemporary-a-thon challenge: read a book with orange on the cover.
