The sweeping curves of the beautiful inks in this book move your eye right to where it needs to go. Nya's courage and love for her sister take center stage. I also thought that it was cool that the book highlighted Water for South Sudan, a real nonprofit founded and run by a former Sudanese refugee, which makes a difference in the lives of brave kids like Nya.

Pairing this book with The Water Princess is a good idea. The book didn't have a great ending. I think the author expected you to have read her book A Long Walk to Water.

This story of an older sister carrying her sick sister home was exciting, but not too scary for my first-grader. She asked to read it again. I was thinking that it would help her understand how water is very scarce in other climates, but I think it also helped her understand that water is harder to get in other places in the world.

This picture book companion to Linda Sue Park's novel A LONG WALK TO WATER is a great introduction and scaffolding for the plight of villagers in South Sudan and around the world who do not have access to clean water. With simple text and evocative illustrations, this book illuminates the journey of two sisters fetching the day's water, half a morning's walk away from their village. When Akeer takes ill on the way back, Nya has to carry her sister and the water all the way back, a feat she doesn't think she can do. But one step at a time she makes it happen.

Not only would this be a great introduction to Park's novel, it's a story about perseverance and based on real events that happen in our world today.

This is a fantastic picture book. Illustrated by the awesome Brian Pinkney from the Pinkney Dynasty of illustrators the swirling paintings make you feel the story! I’ll admit I choked up reading this wonderful story of determination, sibling love and doing hard things. Set in South Sudan this is a perfect book to help and you g child have a wider worldview!

A Long Walk to Water is a middle grade novel read by so many students grades 4 and up. Nya's Long Walk is a way for grades below to comprehend the message in a picture book.

The message of clean water is one everyone needs to hear - stories like Nya's in Sudan are not uncommon. There is no reason why in this day and age people should have to die without access to drinking water. Yet, here we are.

Recommended for pre-school and up.

When Nya's little sister becomes ill on their walk home from getting water, she must find a way to carry both her, and the water home. This is a powerful message about how to manage what seems to be an overwhelming task: just take it a bit at a time. I appreciate that this companion book to Linda Sue Park's novel [b: A Long Walk to Water|7981456|A Long Walk to Water Based on a True Story|Linda Sue Park|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1441975555l/7981456._SY75_.jpg|12409139] might not be based on real characters, it's still full of all kinds of truths.
