Honestly thought this was a clear step up from the first volume.
Where, something like the death of Bumblebee, had no real meaning except to be cruel in the first volume, in this one I feel like they have much more weight. When Ratchet died, I could feel the weight on Opimus Prime as the one Autobot that seemed to be closest to him was gone. Then the end when Prime crushes Shockwave's head, the horror that artist, Jorge Corona, does an excellent job portraying the horror on Prime's face, which is no small feat considering how few features are on his metal mug.
The next big step up was the villains. In volume one, we mostly just had Starscream, who is just a cruel bully who is really a coward at heart. Not much to really like about him, and pretty pathetic in the end. I thought he was going to settle into that roll as leader until Megatron could get around to coming back and ruining his day....but no. Soundwave steps up here, and proves to be a much smarter villain. And through Soundwave's plot, we get Shockwave, the Nazi torturer of Decepticons. Shockwave really came off as truly terrifying and as much as I was disappointed in Ultra Magnus for how his story went, I could get why he would be so afraid of this...thing. But it was still nice to see him get his in the end though. And while we are talking about villains, we should just go ahead and bring in Elita-1. She feels so betrayed by Prime and she betrays Prime here to try and trap him on Cybertron. And if we have any doubt that she has fallen, she is willing to use the life force Shockwave harvested from the ocean life to fuel her revenge.
For the good guys, we don't get too many really added here. Ultra Magnus, the Autobot with the coolest name, turns out to be a disappointment. I can only hope he can redeem himself in the future. Beachcomber shows up and I was really worried what we were doing here making him a pacifist. These kind of characters never come out of stories like this looking good. But having Spike talk him into saving Prime at the end was a nice touch and something fun to have this character do. Now they need to just shuffle him off the page before he starts looking like an idiot stander byer when the fighting erupts again.
All in all, this was great. The only real complaint I could have for this collection, and this isn't new this has been all of the Energon Universe books so far....the lack of a cover gallery. At the very least we should be getting the main covers to the books put in here, a lot of them look really nice. However, I think, they should have a proper cover gallery like the Titan Comics Conan books have, because, like that book, this one has half a dozen cover variations for each issue.
