If you didn't tell other people, was it real or was it just something the two of you were telling yourselves?

It was just simply sad. How someone lives within a conservative heteronormative society, trying to live as true to oneself without getting hurt.

I was heartbroken throughout the whole book. The whole familial intricacies in it were painful. And gosh the whole misogynistic undertones are painful to read. (How is it always the women's fault?). But the whole book was written spectacularly.

I went into this book blind but pretty sure I’d love it. Love is the wrong word but it was very easy to get through  (wonderful formatting) and extremely well written. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time.

Not as unconventional and interesting as Freshwater, but Emezi continues to be transgressive in whatever they write and present high emotions like anger, carnal desire, and grief, really authentically.
