This books was a massive disappointment. I thought it would open up a new classic genre of giallo novels to me. However I was disappointed.

Incredibly suspenseful. I'm not terribly familiar with the time period in Italy/Sicily so a lot of the references were unknown to me. Still fantastic and a very quick read.

I started in Italian (for my Survey of Italian Lit and Culture class), but I just don‰ЫЄt have the time I wish I did to really study the text and understand everything, so I ended up just buying it in English, so then I was able to bang it out in a couple of days. SO. INTERESTING! I TOTALLY knew who was guilty the whole time, and I knew what would happen, and it did, but that didn‰ЫЄt make it uninteresting. It‰ЫЄs definitely a tragedy, but I wouldn‰ЫЄt expect anything less from a Sicilian author from the 1960‰ЫЄs. I can‰ЫЄt really say much else about this book without spoilers, but I did enjoy it.

A 'detective' novel, it's really more than that--a tightly written novel about society and life in small town Sicily. Sciascia somehow gives the reader a real sense of place without lengthy descriptions. One of those books that's thin (Sciascia, in an interview, talked about 'thin' and 'thick' writers) yet complex, but reads very cleanly and quickly. No idea how he did it.
