Persepolis 2

Marjane Satrapi

4.21 AVERAGE

Satrapi describes her life (the 10 years age 14 to 24, that followed Persepolis 1), blending Iran's unfolding political struggles with her own personal discoveries and struggles.

This graphic novel is the second installment in the autobiographical series following Marjane Satrapi's life from Iran to Europe and back again. You cannot read this book without having first read the first one.

This second novel was just as good as the first if not better. It was raw, emotional and such a great representation of migrants in a new country and then the returning back to the country of origin. Often this is not something written about but Satrapi does so elegantly and honestly.

In this second novel the change in Iran is obvious and although this is the Iran more well known to the wider world Satrapi shows the world the people of Iran. There are bombs, oppression, and horrific fundamentalist laws that are well known but there are also parties, dancing, bravery and joy. Satrapi changes the world's view of Iran and her people.

The writing in this installment is perhaps funnier but also much darker than the first novel. The story line extending into adulthood and the struggles that entail with that. The influence of drugs, sexual freedom and socialism are all touched on in this novel without making the story about these issue instead of Marjane. The story weaves from Marjane leaving Tehran at age fourteen until her second departure again as an adult, with lots of real life experiences behind her.

This book is heart wrenching but also hopeful and very worth picking up, regardless of what you usually read, this book transcends genre.

Read a book that takes place on a different continent than where you live
reflective medium-paced

It's always a challenge to rate memoirs, because this is someone's life and stories and shouldn't that automatically make it 5 stars because they've lived their life so fully?

This was an excellently written continuation from the first book, but I think there were several stories that I would have liked to see more fully.  A few of these just felt like they cut off too soon.

Satrapi returns with wit and humor in her sequel to her graphic novel debut. I never know quite what to say about books like this except you need to read it.
