Persepolis 2

Marjane Satrapi

I loved the first one, but this one fell flat for me.
After Persepolis #1, I was expecting something thought-provoking and heart-wrenching from this second novel as well. Instead, #2 breezes through many potentially-shocking events and I was left feeling a bit mmmmmmeeeeh

The second volume of Persepolis was very moving and thought provoking, but it just didn't hold all of the same magic of the first volume for me. I realize Volume 2 deals with some heavier issues, but it lacked the humor and tenderness of the first volume that I thought really made Satrapi's story unique. I also felt that the book ended on an unsatisfying note that made it seem unfinished. I enjoyed seeing Satrapi grow up and have to put her values to the test, but the stories just feel less memorable, and though there's something very human about ignoring your own values sometimes, it gets pretty depressing when it's most the book.

This book feels more like Marjane making peace with her own life, likely exorcising some internal demons, it's still a very compelling read, but I have to say, I enjoyed the first volume a little bit more.

I'm glad she let it all out, since it was clear through most of the story that her past was a heavy weight she carried with her for years. I'm also glad she decided to share it with us, you leave this book enriched. Not only from reading her experiences living under a regime that won't allow you simple freedoms, but also how it is to feel like you belong nowhere, that your home will never welcome you really, and not knowing if another place ever will. And despite that, moving forward, rebelling where it's possible, finding happiness where you can.

This volume gets dark, but so does life sometimes, I'm happy she was able to bear the weight and go on. To be blunt, she's strong af, I'm seriously impressed.

p.s: marjane's parents are gems
