Persepolis 2

Giving the current situation in Ukraine, it's hard to read a story about a teenager studying abroad while her country's at war with their neighbor, but in some ways it felt like I had to finish this compelling story.

In addition to the basic outlines of a part of recent history I knew very little about, this primarily functions as a coming of age story for Marjane. She finishes high school, returns home, and then has to figure out what's next, whether it's in her country ruled by opressive fundamentalists, or abroad. Her decisions are flavored by her setting, but, ultimately, she faces the same choices all young people face as they decide what path to set their adult life on. I can see why this is considered a classic.

I'm not entirely sure why I thought the first Persepolis book was better, perhaps because the narrator was a bit precocious. I was quite worried for the older Marjane at parts. However, it is undeniable she is a very intelligent, strong, admirable woman.

After feeling disappointed after reading Persepolis I decided to go ahead and try the second book just to see if it got any better. While the flow of the story improved the actual storyline did not. Marjane makes mistake after mistake in this part of her life without seeming to learn anything from those mistakes. Her parents do everything for her and it seems to have made Marjane rather spoiled. She makes herself out to be a selfish girl trying to find her place in the world and there was seemingly no actual point to the book.

I also had a hard time with her choice of art style, it says that she studied art/graphic design yet her art was quite terrible and not interesting to look at.

Unfortunately the humor in this book was also a let down, nothing made me laugh, rather any jokes in the novel made me feel bad for her life or just didn’t seem to fit with anything else going on.

Persepolis 2 is often depressing, and though very humorous at times, it lacks the page-turning element of Persepolis. It's not as captivating and much more laid back. The story of a depressed young adult just isn't as interesting as the story of an innocent little girl. It wraps up nicely, though, with an ending that corresponds to that of Persepolis.

Marjane Satrapi may be my new favorite person.

Not quite as charming as Persepolis, but still well done. Satrapi's account of her rebellious adolescence in Paris and subsequent return to Iran.
