This book really hit home. It is amazingly written. I loved the ways that the chapters are interspersed with the documentation from her stay. How it all comes together to show both the institution but also the very real people she met also locked up with her really got me thinking and questioning my own beliefs.

The movie was already one of my all time favourites so I knew I'd love the book, and it definitely was even better than the adaptation. I loved the fact the chapters were really short because I prefer them. This was an instant 5/5 and a new favourite of mine. Some of the stories and the quotes from this book will forever be with me. Even though I don't have any diagnosis of mental illness, I felt really close to Susanna: I think that is because this is also the story of a teenage girl who feels disconnected from the world she lives in, which is something I have experienced and still experience, like many other young women.

this was exactly what i needed right now. i really loved this book! it’s such a solid piece of self-exploration with honest anecdotes to keep you turning pages. i felt understood in some sections, and yet felt completely out of my depth and as if i was learning something new and important in others. the writing is easy to read and introspective throughout. i highly recommend this if you are in the mood for something short and beautifully told. it’s not perfect, but it was a great reading experience.
