This book was so messed up. But good!

An Anonymous Girl begins with makeup artist Jessica signing up for a psychology study with a mysterious Dr. Shields. She figures all she'll have to do is answer a couple of questions and take the money and go. It starts off small but eventually the questions of morality keep getting more intense, and Jessica finds the sessions becoming outings where she's told what to wear and do. Jess starts becoming paranoid when it seems like Dr. Shields knows everything, secrets that Jess doesn't want to share. As Dr. Shields manipulative experiments get worse, Jess finds herself caught in a web of lies she never wanted to be part in, and she doesn't know who to trust.
People are motivated to break their moral compasses for a variety of primal reasons: survival, hate, love, envy, passion. And money.
Ooooh, I've had such a bad time with thrillers lately- they all either go too hard and get ridiculous and unbelievable or they end up just being not exciting at all. This is the second book from this author duo and I must say, both have been a super fun time for me. This book I liked even more than their last one, [b:The Wife Between Us|34189556|The Wife Between Us|Greer Hendricks|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1496862122s/34189556.jpg|55227731]. That book had a lot of surprises and twists and turns but it did rely on a major plot twist. This book on the other hand is a study in obsession, trust, and power over someone else. It really puts the 'psychological' in psychological thriller. I'm just so, SO happy to finally pick up a new thriller, and actually enjoy it.

The mystery isn't much of a mystery but even when Jess herself figures it out, it doesn't help her. When someone has complete control over you and your life? There is nothing more scary than that and that is where the suspense in this book is. Jess gets trapped and she fights, but Dr. Shields and the mess that is created is hard to get out of.

The audiobook was fantastic, and the narration for both povs was spot on. I really enjoyed this story, and I can't wait to see what these authors come out with next.

Was alright as far as thrillers go. I didn't find any parts particularly shocking, and the reveals weren't very satisfying, but it was engaging to read and I found the back and forth perspective shift interesting to read. Liked it enough to want to read another from these authors and have heard good things about their other books.

I received an e-copy of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I dabble in the thriller genre, but I'm not as obsessed as many - especially as thrillers seem to be en vogue lately (thanks, Gillian Flynn!). As far as they go, this one is a bit unique with a new and fresh plot. The first half of this book dragged for me. The author is busy setting up the scene and background, but I was anxious for something to happen already. I did like the alternating narrators, but especially at first, Dr. Shield's voice was jarring and not engaging (of course, it is intended to be that way).

Around the 50-60% mark, things started to pick up to a true thriller pace, and I finished that part quickly. I did enjoy the ending and didn't see it all coming, therefore I ended the book satisfied. If you're a big fan of thrillers I would recommend checking this out. If you're a casual fan, I would stick with another title.

this was The Golden Couple but if you squinted really really hard. there were so many parallels it was getting confusing.
