i honestly couldn’t finish this. i rarely start a book and don’t finish it but i just couldn’t. maybe my mistake was listening to it instead of reading, but it was so so so slow

I enjoyed their previous book enough that I grabbed this one.
Greer and Sarah do a marvelous job of keeping the suspense going throughout.
Jessica, a makeup artist overhears that a professor is conducting some research and is willing to pay a decent amount of money for participating. Her financial problems were her motivator for sneaking into the study that forever changed her mind.
I loved this story and am begging my colleagues to read it with me. I love how disassociated the doctor is throughout the novel, it definitely heightens the suspense.
How far will you go to keep your secrets?

Note: the doctors in this novel are completely unethical.

The premise of this book really kept me turning the pages.
Jessica could be anyone. Someone you know. A transplant in NYC trying to make ends meet.
Her MUA job doesn't make her as comfortable financially as she'd like. Her sister has special needs and her parents struggle to keep up.
But, she catches wind of a study that will pay her $500 for her input. She catches wind of this study by taking someone elses place. But once the doctor gets a feel for Jessica, she doesn't want to let her go. Instead asking her to do increasingly dangerous things (including trying to seduce her cheating husband who might be dangerous as well).
Jess is a character you will root for. She's cash strapped, and desperate. She just wants to be able to pay her rent and help her parents while living her dream. Dr. Shields is the perfect villain. Cold and calculating.
3.5 stars for another anti climatic ending.

Loved the twist and turns. Didn't expect the ending!

3.5 Stars, rounded up

These authors are very talented in weaving a intricate psychological tale. I enjoyed how the story was told in 2 different perspectives going back and forth. Great writing and dialog.

I wish I hadn’t finished this.

“How do you know if you can really trust someone?”
“If you need to ask that question, then you probably already know the answer.”

AKA the quote that sums up the entire premise of the book.

Jessica is a makeup artist living paycheck to paycheck, when she overhears a client talking about a research project that pays really well. When Jessica knows her client is going to bail, she goes in her clients place.

The test is her sitting for two hours by herself answering increasing personal questions about morality on a computer.

The doctor conducting the survey becomes more and more interested in Jessica. After they meet, Jessica begins therapy with Dr Shields as part of the project. Their lives become more and more intertwined and the test becomes more and more bizarre.

Random thoughts

Jessica was very realistic. She’s just trying to make her way on the world and that’s going to resonate well with a lot of people.

They should have addressed harassment with Jessica’s former boss more.

I liked the twist that the doctor is female. I didn’t like
Spoiler she was so crazy obsessed over her cheating husband. She seemed way too smart for that. If she was just an evil mastermind doing it to screw with people, well, that would have seemed a little more realistic.

Even though he was such a minor character, Ben the grad student was such a douche and made an impression, especially when Jessica was asking for help.
“Am I in danger?”
“I can’t answer that Jess”, he says, just before he walks away.

What a jerk, am I right?

I can’t help but compare it to the last thriller I read, which was the silent patient, that is also about a young woman exploited by a therapist. I liked this book a little better, but I didn’t love
Spoiler Dr Shield’s suicide at the end
.

All in all, an entertaining read. 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 because it engaged me enough to read it in one sitting. If thrillers are your thing, you’ll enjoy this one. I recommend borrowing before buying, at least until the paperback comes out.

Thorough enjoyed this thriller book. I rated 4 ⭐️ because I personally found the final ending to be rather anticlimactic. The writing was beautiful, it truly puts you in the mind of a psycho-who is maliciously skillful with their mind. Everything she did was very premeditated and meticulous, it threw me off with the way the book ended her story. Dr. Shields was cunning, and it was shown through every relationship. She was always the one in control, and she knew how to maintain that position in the relationships. Lastly, I wish there would have been more twists at the end… something else uncovered. Great read !!
