Thanks to a Goodreads giveaway I was able to read the Advanced copy of this book! I must admit that it was a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The loss of the one star is due to areas in the book that I personally found as hard to get through. Not because they were terrible in any sense, but they just weren’t very interesting to me. However, every page leads perfectly to the story’s end. It’s amazing how two authors can blend knowledge and ideas so fluidly! Jessica, the main character in the story struggles with very realistic issues. Having to go through an emotional tragedy, sexual assault, and pure responsibility and independence is rather common sadly. But I was able to see Jessica work through these traumas and stressors very strongly. I loved her as a character. I wasn’t very pleased with her last action in the story...I was just surprised she did it. But at the same time, I do completely understand why she would.
As for Thomas and Lydia, they were quite interesting characters. I loved the back and forth we saw between who held Jessica’s trust within the two of them. The stories all held secrets and so many random little unexpected things would pop up. Everything in this book was played by mind rather than weapons, which was amazing. The ability to learn and manipulate can definitely be dangerous, and we see it in this story ourselves. I was happy with the final result, and was so proud of how assured Jessica became in her decisions and herself!

really really enjoyed this.

i think it can be hard to have female characters become unhinged without it falling into stereotypes... i don't want to see a woman go crazy over a man. usually. but i think it worked in this book.

Jessica is a makeup artist living in New York. She is struggling to get by and when overhears a client discussing a study about mortality that pays the participants $500.00 per session she is intrigued. We’ve already learned Jessica is good at hiding the truth; her parents think she is working with theater companies as a makeup artist. Jessica needs the money badly. She is supporting herself and her family.
Jessica joins the study never realizing it will change her life.
The story caught me from the start. I was even intrigued by her job as a traveling make up artist and how she studies her clients and transforms them.
The cat and mouse game between Jessica and Doctor Shields is intense.
The story started dragging about 3/4 through. I was anxious to see how the story would end and it wasn’t fast enough for my liking.
The end wasn’t perfect ; I wish it had ended differently, but the epilogue made up for it.
By the way , I thought Thomas was a twit.
Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for the ebook for review.

The second book by this writing duo. I am more familiar with Sarah Pekkanen and have read and reviewed almost all of her books here on Kritters Ramblings.

The synopsis for this one is we have Jessica Farris who is barely making ends meet for a few reasons and when at a job she hears about a study where she can make a large amount of cash and at this moment in her life she will do about anything for more income. Dr. Shields is the person running this study and she has quite a few reasons to run this study and they aren't all fo real academic research.
