Enjoyable, quick read but too much emphasis on the Trump era. This part was actually quite interesting, but the quick pacing of the book ended up meaning that spending so much time on this part of his public life meant Insufficient time spent on his business career, time as governor, and even 2012 campaign. Nonetheless well written and effective and capturing the guys nature.

"Do weigh our own political fortunes more heavily than we weigh the strength of our Republic, the strength of our democracy, and the cause of freedom? What is the weight of personal acclaim compared to the weight of conscience?"

An incredibly important book for our time and this moment in political history.

What an exceptional political biography. After 45 interviews with Romney and a review of tons of his personal material (diaries, emails, texts, etc), McKay really understands why Romney made many of the choices he did.

And his insight into his 2012 run and it's failure against a politically weak incumbent is spot on. Romney was a man who couldn't answer the question, "Why do you want to run for POTUS?" Sure, he has a strong business acumen from Bain and running the Salt Lake City Olympics, but he could never explain why he was the right vision for America. Coupled with unfounded bias against his personal faith and his demeanor as a man who is genuine but appears not to be, he retrospectively could never win an election like this.

The book does a good job of showing the impact of the sharp rightward veer of the GOP on Romney's 2012 bid and actually proves Romney's criticism of the book that Coppins overemphasizes the ideological correction course Romney took by rejecting a few parts of the Trump agenda and voting to impeach #45.

One fun note: Romney said how his father's "brainwashing" gaffe that tanked his own national run made him hyper focused on his word choice, sometimes to a fault. But his 47% gaffe, a poorly said phrase about the strength of Obama's base, was a big reason he got 47% of the popular vote.

Fascinating book and amazing story.

My greatest disappointment from this book is learning that we almost got Romney running for president as an independent during this upcoming election on a self proclaimed kamikaze mission against Trump. That would’ve been amazing to watch.

you either die a cool barista or live long enough to get a 9-5 and read the new mitt romney biography. good biography tho

If you had told me in 2012 how much I would respect and admire Mitt Romney in 2023, I wouldn’t have believed you. This book is worth reading.

A page-turner!

Yeah this is a great biography for a guy I already respected a lot but now respect even more. It's refreshing to hear a story about a man who stands up for his beliefs even when it is hard. The author painted a great picture of what Mitt is like when no one is watching. I appreciated the honesty and full access granted to the author.

Regardless of your politics, give this a read.
