This is an awesome book!
I got this the day before I brought my 3 month old Chihuahua puppy home. Here we are almost three months later and I still find myself going back to this book for various things; I love the method of positive reinforcement. My parents were always the type of dog owners who thought they had to be "the Alpha" and show the animal who is boss. It always felt wrong to me, your dog shouldn't obey you because they fear you! Who wants a relationship based on fear?? They should obey you because they love and trust you--because they WANT to. Our pets were never just animals to me, they were like my kin. I would never intentionally hurt or scare my siblings or children.
It also brought to my attention the importance of your dogs energy level and their behavior based on whether they have been exercised properly. I now have a 5 month old puppy who can sit, lay down, shake, roll over, is 90% potty trained, and tells me when she needs to play or when she needs to potty.
That's why Zak's method resonated with me so much.

This is an amazing book written by a wonderful person. I highly suggest you check out Zak George's youtube channel if you have a dog. I recently adopted a chihuahua/ papillon mix from my local shelter, and Zak George has literally saved me so much time and stress. He has videos that show you step-by-step how to train your dog in a COMPASSIONATE way that works. My family has always had chihuahuas, and I honestly never thought I would adopt one for myself because my family never trained theirs. The dogs would pee everywhere, bark at everything, and destroy anything they could get to. They didn't know any basic commands. It really turned me off from the breed, but Zak was George was able to save the day.

He is so passionate about helping dogs and people. There are terrible breed stereotypes that really harm dogs and how people train/ treat them, and Zak Makes it clear that EVERY dog is trainable and worth love. In ONE training session I was able to train my chihuahua to sit! A breed that is known for not being smart/ untrainable! My dog learned it so fast and continues to learn other more complex tricks.

Zak George shows you how to teach your dog something and have the dog think for themselves. With this method, the dog is actually learning something instead of behaving a certain way due to fear. Zak George is against using methods that cause a dog harm or makes them uncomfortable, as it damages the trust between your dog and you.

My favorite thing I learned from this book is that you can use play as a reward. My dog loves treats, but he goes wild over a game of tug of war or fetch. By knowing what my dog values, I am able to reward him in ways that he really cares about and enjoys. It encourages him to learn more and keeps his focus on what we are doing because he is having fun.

An excellent introduction to the world of dogs. George clearly lays out all the basic requirements needed to choose and raise a dog lovingly for first time owners and veterans alike. Interactive portions highlight George's YouTube videos that explain dog training concepts that may not be completely comprehensible on text alone (a plus for visual learners). Each chapter contains short, in-depth subsections and conclude with frequently asked questions relating to the chapter's topic. All of the end notes are excellent references too.

I highly recommend this to every dog owner. Zak George's perspective on dog training is not only humane, but it is also backed up by numerous scientific studies from the 21st century. Please check out his YouTube channel for more content.
