Nothing special, sorta reads like an old folk tale. But Capote is a great writer! His descriptions are so good. It also reminded me of the new movie Poor Things a little bit.

“…and a breeze, rich with the scent of rained on-flowers…” this made me miss summer

cute lovestory

This was a short an interesting read. It remembers me of "The Lady of the Camelias" - a classic tale of a prostitute falling in love with one of her customers - but it is different as this is not one of Ottilie's customers that feels for, but rather a man who reminds her of her rural upbringing. Life as a married woman goes through phases of happiness, irritation and bleakness but Ottilie is in love. Even though i found the ending quite strange, the message is clear: love can cause suffering and make you do crazy things, but Ottilie would never give up her love for anything, not even the extravagant life she had at the Champs-Élysées. Love is like catching a bee but trusting that it won't sting you, Capote suggests. Love makes us do strange things, and it isn't always easy, but to know love is better than to know luxury.

Truman Capote is a masterful storyteller. Though this is only the second of his I have read, it has definitely encouraged me to read the remainder of his works. House of Flowers has a unique form of dialogue, giving the notion that it is being told rather than using quotation marks to indicate a character is speaking. Capote's use of description is admirable, and it is clear that as a writer I could learn a lot from him. I would recommend this story to those who enjoyed Capote's other works.

This short story, along with two others, was in a copy of Breakfast at Tiffany's, so I figured I'd read it. I do enjoy stories that have tiny little sayings, ways of life and love that people have passed on. This one being that (potential spoiler?) if you catch a wild bee and hold it in your hand, you've found true love. However, I do wish it hadn't ended the way it did. SPOILER: Not that I'd want Ottilie to go back to prostitution, but her unhappiness with Royal was tangible.
