Everything about this book is so fascinating! You would think a guy stealing some birds and feathers from a museum wouldn't be such an exciting premise but I could not put this book down. I was hooked! (pun intended!) Johnson does such a great job of showing the intricacies and gravity of the crime and its implications for the future. He even goes as far back as to describe in detail the lengths naturalist Alfred Wallace went to acquire the bird specimens involved in the heist to show the importance of what was lost to our understanding of the natural world. You get a really good look at Edwin Rist's character and his motivation for the theft, not to mention the niche hobby of fly-tying (which I had never even heard of before reading this book). And for the conservationist in me, I loved learning about how some of the anti wildlife trafficking laws came to be in the US...go women! This book reads like a fiction crime story but the fact that it happened goes to show how greed and obsession can make humans do terrible things.

This book was absolutely fascinating. My only complaint is that the first part probably could have been paced a little better to keep me interested...I didn't get hooked until the story picked up.
