It was pretty good, but I'd hoped they'd save all the queens in the end :(

I don't want to even remotely hint at anything since the release is so far out, but I really enjoyed this book! The plot was engaging, the characters were likeable and funny, and there was a lot of twists that really amped up my mind-blown status.

Four stars, sure why not. I had fun reading this. A literary giant it is not. But I liked the characters and it had a fun mystery component. Always love me a story about a scrappy female thief.

A phenomenal read. Ate it all up in a single day. The world building is clear and reasonable. Truly on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved the main characters and the multi-view storytelling. It made time fly by.
Enjoyable fantasy with well crafted worlds and characters. I was impressed with how quickly I was immersed in the story. Well done to this author. Very deserving of the CBCA shortlisting!
3.5!!!
brooo the twists kept twisting fr. like it was so interesting but the reveal wasnt my fav??? i wish they were introduced earlier and hid clues throughout the beginning to build up for the reveal, but it was sorta just thrown in there out of the blue, same with the romance tbh. like the way the entire story was told was so cool and i really liked it, but at times i found the romance and some plot points a little flat?? but over all i enjoyed it so

I was looking forward to reading this, having heard good things.
The story has a promising premise and the back and forward between character POV was handled well. The murder mystery had me going till the end. Characters were mostly well-defined and likable - or not, as they were supposed to be.
A unique and quirky setting but the world building didn't quite gel for me. I know it's fantasy but I felt uncomfortable with one of the quadrants attempting to genetically modify people prior to birth to perfect them and then killing them off early if they were born with a disability. I wanted a bit more revolution and rebellion around this from those in that quadrant - or anywhere really. The population seemed to accept being kept in their quadrants without much rancour, and that kind of non-reaction reflected what I felt was the slightly flat social and political structure.
Finally, I read a lot of series, so I enjoyed this stand alone novel's hopeful and tidy finish.
A pleasant read.
