Trigger Warnings: Murder, grief, death, gore, violence, claustrophobia, ableism, death of queer characters,
Four Dead Queens is an epic fantasy and murder mystery story. This is one of those books that you are on the edge of your seat, riding with the twists and turns. Astrid Scholte’s writing is beautiful and very clever. I did not see all the plot twists coming. The world of Quadara was so interesting and complex.
Four Dead Queens is told mostly from Keralie’s point of view with the Queens (Corra, Iris, Stessa, and Marguerite) interspersed. I loved all the main characters in this book especially the four queens. The romance between Varin and Keralie was fun to read; I loved the banter between them. I liked that Keralie was an unreliable narrator, and you get to see her motivations grow as the story goes along.
Overall, Four Dead Queens is an addictive murder mystery, that I highly recommend.
Thank you to Allen & Unwin for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

(Year of Epic Reads Weekly Challenge #9: Read a book with a heist).
I was leaning towards 4 stars until about 85% of the book, but then I settled on 3 stars. I was just unhappy with some choices, that felt a little too easy (for example, adding in Arebella by the end of the book, making her a very single-noted old trope, or stop talking about Lyker entirely, when so much of him was given at first). Also, the romance was weird. The sewing room scene just felt out of place, absurd considering the situation - it could have been much sweeter if it was less physical at that point. I just could not ship it with things as they were.
Despite that, though, the writing is very engaging, and I never felt bored while reading. Also, I could not stop thinking about it, there is room for different theories, and I really wanted to guess the solution because I got to care about the queens, they were just so likable! The general heist part was quite thrilling too.
Honestly, for a debut novel, it is great. I think Scholte describes herself correctly as a fan of Disney, Lucas and Spielberg, because her tale is extremely entertaining regardless of flaws.

Court intrigue, thieves, and mind control. Honestly, love this book and the dangers of being too rigid.
Not enticing enough to finish faster but enticing enough to know what happened at the end.
fast-paced
Oh I really liked this one. Dark, crazy, unknown when each story is taking place. Never know who to trust in the fantasy murder mystery.
Concept: ★★★★ Characters: ★★ Pacing: ★

This book is wonderful! I love the writing and the story is so unique. Keralie is one of the first main characters in a YA novel that I genuinely like! The ending is a little cheesy, but that was the least of my concerns. This book is amazing and everyone should read it!
Well written murder mystery with interesting world building, but predictable plot.
